Have you ever wanted to get blushes and butterflies in your stomach? If so, I'm sure Ig You'll Have Me by Eunnie will give you those symptoms and more!
Summary
Since high school, Momo Gardner has put herself last. Whether it be helping friends with a quick spot of cash or help on a quiz, she's always lent a helping hand. But when she sees PG, a mysterious girl with a penchant for breaking hearts, she starts to want something for yourself secretly. Or, in the case of someone. And while the two seem to hit it off rather well, whether or not they stay together will be another factor.
Momo: Our MC Momo is a shy, cute, affectionate, and empathic person. They like to go out of their way to help people big and small, even if it sabotages their lives. Especially if it sabotages her own life; after a bad experience with an old flame in high school, Momo has developed a damaged sense of self-worth, which she must challenge if she hopes to be with PG.
PG: Short for Priscilla Thuy Giang, PG is a confident, mischievous, and dashing woman with a history of flings with other women. Similar to Momo, after a bad misunderstanding with a close high school friend, PG has opted to be bolder with her intentions but still lacks some social skills.
Overview
Unlike the last spotlight, I couldn't find much on Eunnie, but we still have some information for those who want to support her directly. She is a Korean American illustrator living in Washington and makes fun short comics and cute art on her social media pages. If you want to get something from her directly, then check out shop.eunnie.boo.com. Her various social media could also help.
Given the gorgeous visuals, I might even get some art for myself. Eunnie has this cutesy chibi style, making it feel poppy yet nostalgic. Combined with the easy paneling, it is a straightforward story to digest and absorb. PG and Momo have an adorable and easy-going friendship and romance throughout the book, making them fun. Despite commanding very different personalities, the two mesh together like PB and J. They shared interests in coconut cream buns or the Fantasia Alien books.
Like most romances, though, this book's conflicts are primarily internal. Outside of that pesky communication, the book shows that the real devil is how perceptions are paralleled in the book. Momo's low opinion of herself is reflected in her overprotective and needy friends, who often hold her back. Despite their best efforts, PG deals with former flames who are mad about her choices, so both must overcome them to find a semblance of truth.
Epilogue
This is a bit of a shorter spotlight, but despite the book's length, I don't have too much to say. It's an easygoing, well-paced love story featuring two great protagonists. I'm glad I found it a couple of months back for this set of spotlights and even more delighted to have a romance book with two POC protagonists. I desperately want to read more of that. If Eunnie chooses to make another book in the future, I'll cover it in another spotlight.
