章節 308: They are inside the train
"Any news from the Galahead? It's been a while since they sent their emergency call."
"I heard from the guys in wagon four that apparently, Galahead nearly crashed due to a new obstacle from the dungeon. They said it was a speed bump for trains. If they hadn't stopped fast enough, they would have been derailed and flung into the sky."
"Speed bumps for a train? That sounds nasty!"
As usual the adventurers guarding the back engine have nothing better to do other than gossiping about what is happening to other trains. Galahead nearly derailing was a shock but nothing really happened. There weren't even any monsters around. And now that we know about this new kind of obstacle we can easily spot it.
"Klein! Stop daydreaming and get back to checking the engine! If something happens to the front engine, we are the ones in charge of getting everyone out of this place."
"Yes, yes. Checking the engine for the fiftieth time."
That old man is such a stickler for rules. I can't even get five minutes to mental complain about those adventurers gossiping! But he's my boss and the engineer in charge of the back engine. I seriously check the engine and unsurprisingly, there's nothing wrong. What could be wrong with an engine that liters only gets used in emergencies? Every time we use this engine, they do a full check up and repair course on it back at the station. This is… boring and pointless.
A light cough comes from the voice pipe and I immediately regret my thoughts. Shit, rule one of being on the back engine, never complain that it's too boring. I just didn't know it counted for mere thoughts too.
"Front engine to back engine, front engine to back engine. Multiple monster sources were detected ahead and our new lookout has spotted what is likely to be a speed bump like Galahead faced. We are shutting off the engine here and will begin to lightly brake to lower our speed. Please start up the back engine and get us out of there as soon as possible! I repeat. We are shutting off the front engine and will begin to brake. Start up the back engine and get us out."
"Back engine to front engine, back engine to front engine. Understood, we will begin starting up the engine. I repeat. We will begin staring up the engine."
Here we go. I do another check in the engine, everything is fine but now I understand the need to check. I give the old man the signal that we are clear and we start shoveling coal into the engine.
"This is lookout to all station aboard the Bovine. The monsters appear to have some sort of shelters alongside the tracks. They will may to board from the ground. Prepare for combat. Turrets, get as many of them as you can!"
This is bad. With the monsters having shelter, the turrets won't be able to keep them away with their suppression fire. Once they get onto the train… we might lose a few.
"Stop worrying! You get distracted too easily. The faster we get the engine going, the quicker this all ends."
Having shoveled enough coal, we step back and the old man uses some low level fire magic to fire up the coals. With the coals coming to life as the flames consume them, we start hitting levers and pulling cranks to get the engine going and engage the wheels.
"Old man, do we need to activate the magic drive?"
"Not yet but once the front engine gives word that they have stopped completely, we'll use that boost to make our escape."
"Front engine to back engine, front engine to back engine. We-ghuhb"
Loud coughing suddenly sounds through the voice pipe connecting us to the front engine and a few puffs of sand erupt out of the pipe.
"Sand? Front engine, is everything alright?"
"Yes-hurhg- just a sudden cloud of sand. Anyway, as I was- what is that? WHAT IS THAT?!"
Faint banging sounds echo through the voice pipe and the engineer seems to be panicking. The old man worriedly looks at the lever that activates the magic drive. We are still slowing down and activating it now will cause us to use most of the magic drives power to stop our forward momentum. The magic drive won't last long and we'll have to rely on the coals for anything after that.
"Back engine! Use the magic drive! They got into our engine! They're about to break out! We have been boarded! I repeat. We have be- Hoooooooooaaaaa!"
The trembling voice of the engineer's assistant is drowned out by thunderous roaring. We have been boarded… through the front engine. These monsters are mad!
The old man immediately hits the magic drive and our engine begins to glow as the weakening forward moment is stopped and we start to gradually move backwards as the magic drive churns and forces the entire train to start moving. Still, we are beginning to move and that is good. We will make it and I'll pray for the guys in the front engine.
"This is lookout to all stations! A horde is approaching from the side. There's a fast moving object that will soon collide with the train! Prepare for impact! Back engine, give us everything you have or things might get ugly!"
A sudden crash causes the train to wobble but nothing to bad happens.
Then, with a sudden jerk, our acceleration slows down. How? Is that thing holding us back?
"They activated the front engine's magic drive! The monsters activated the front engine's magic drive!"
The old man realizes what is happening and immediately yells into the voice pipe connected to the entire train. With the front engine's magic drive working against us, the magic drives cancel each other out and our engine is the only thing pulling us forward. But our engine only started a few minutes ago and can't build much speed yet.
"There's poison in the air! Get out of the train!"
