章節 219: The presentation (3)

"And what of the second individual involved? Anything we know?"

"Darwin locked down space with his magic the moment he felt someone appear out of nowhere. Despite that, the entire city was moved out of our range of detection with very few traces for us to follow. We are still attempting to track them but so far we've had no luck."

"How can someone get past Darwin's spatial lock? Higher-leveled space magic? A skill?"

"Good guesses. However, having a higher magic level than Darwin is already tough. And to use that to get away from him would require a much higher level which we doubt that individual had.

"Our opponent likely has both a decent level in space magic and a skill that can facilitate some sort of teleportation. He used space magic to loosen the spatial lock Darwin set and escaped through an opening."

"And you can't track them at all?"

"Spatial movement skills are hard to trace for space magic users. Only someone with an innate talent for sensing space and any possible distortions or past movements will stand a chance. The only one who fulfills that criteria is Tele but she will need a while to get there."

So tracking will have to wait. I have to admit to myself that knowing there's an enemy out there capable of blocking and escaping Darwin while being weighed down by a city is scaring me. Will I ever be able to defeat them?

"You will reach unimaginable height so long as you manage to unearth the potential buried within you, Guy."

The fear lessens gradually as I hear the unmistakable certainty in Naviʼs voice. She's usually straightforward when it comes to estimating probabilities and there's no reason for her to lie to me.

"Thanks, Navi, I needed to hear that."

Nabi nods and continues the presentation. I thought it would be over but apparently, there's more. What follows next are a bunch of slides that are dedicated solely to Jadeʼs circumstances.

Possible reasons that might have played into Jadeʼs losing control, observations of her current mental state, observations of her combat ability, treatment methods that might help her recover, and a bunch of people's profiles who should be her former family.

Navi skips over quite a bit of content since I don't understand most of what she's saying anyway. Still, Jade really seems to be developing into a scary monster. I can only pray this never happens to me.

"That's all for Jade. Lastly, we needed to address our future actions in response to both the city's sudden appearance and subsequent disappearance.

"As you know, the butterfly hall didn't participate during our last confrontation with the paragons and their halls. The fact that they are getting involved now is concerning especially if other formerly uninvolved halls do the same.

"Also, Darwin's personal grudge against them makes him prone to hasty and violent reactions. Therefore, our biggest trump card suddenly became a weakness. For now, it has been decided that Darwin won't be involved in anything concerning the butterfly hall. He's been wholly cut off from the relevant networks so don't tell him anything without my permission."

Is Darwin alright?

"You said he's brooding... Shouldn't we try to cheer him up somehow? Things must be pretty hard for him especially if no one is there for him."

"Darwin's current way of brooding isn't something where he wants company. He's racing through several top dungeons making the lives of any adventurer inside miserable if he doesn't manage to unalive them directly."

"So he's venting his frustration because he was unable to destroy the suspended city?"

"That and he feels guilty about what happened to Jade."

"He had nothing to do with that, did he?"

"Guy, Darwin is the boss around here. He sanctions any deployment and is responsible for keeping members safe. He snapped and left his post to attack the suspended city. One of the reasons we failed to have Jade retreat in time was that he had nearly paralyzed our chain of command by suddenly disappearing."

I see Navi pause after her last sentence. It's as if she held something back. Her guilty look tells me that she not only read my mind and really did leave something out.

"Can you just tell me?"

"Promise me you won't blame Darwin!"

"That's a great way to prepare me for what's to come. Fine, I'll try not to blame him."

"Darwin's soul is very powerful and when he fails to keep calm, he gives off an untraceable form of soul pressure. As I said we can't trace it so we can't tell if he gave off some of it. Usually, we can tell if it was there by looking at the effects it had on someone. However, all the things that combined to cause Jadeʼs state of mind make it impossible to tell."

"How significant was this soul pressure for Jadeʼs descent into her current mental state?"

"That depends. Viewed in isolation, its influence doesn't even amount to a single percent. However, considered time-wise and in concert with the other factors, it might have been the straw to break the camel's back."

"The what now?"

"The thing that tipped everything off the edge. Hence why Darwin is so distraught over it happening."

"And his solution is to kill people and get stronger. I understand his desire to grow stronger but won't that intensify the potential effects of his soul pressure?"

"He won't listen, I've tried."

"So what do we do now?"

"We will speed things up. You will go to your carrier outing and get our program some publicity and after that, it's straight into battle. We plan to completely retake all floors of Colosseum madness."

"It will be a hectic week then. Anything else I need to do?"

"Don't get into trouble and don't try to spare humans because I'm already drowning in paperwork. Just get your work done and go spend some time with your family."

Got it, will do!
