章節 204: Crisis (1)

Fine, let's play the waiting game then. With me and the lesser darkness lindworm in position to strike the two shield-bearers and the guardian can't move or they'll risk exposing their healer. If their healer were to be exposed we'd strike immediately and they'd surely die.

Not that it will change their sealed fate if they keep defending their healer. The salamander approaches and blows one fiery breath after another at the guardian. The stout defender's shield and various skills allow him to block most of the flames but the heat still gets to him.

The metal that his armor and shield are made of seems to have a pretty high heat conductivity. If this guy continues to hold his position he will be cooked alive. Unfortunately, the healer won't just let that happen.

She chants an incantation and directs a healing flow of energy into the guardian's back. This can save them for now but they have two problems. Firstly, the healer's mp is limited so she can't keep healing the guardian forever. Even if she supplements herself with potions she will probably run out of juice before the salamander even feels some strain.

Secondly, while the healer's powers can keep the guardian from being burnt to a crisp he still feels the pain from being repeatedly burnt. A human's natural pain tolerance can only go so far before he will inevitably flinch away. I doubt the guardian has more than one or two levels in the pain resistance skill.

Now the question is, will the healer run out of mp first, or will the guardian lose to the pain and step out of the flames.

The chances for the latter to occur increase quickly as the guardian begins to tremble. His breathing grows heavier and he even begins to pant. I could attack now and take advantage of his already depleting willpower but I decide to wait until he runs out completely.

The trembling intensifies and reaches the point where he is outright shaking. The guardian is only barely holding onto his heavy shield and I can tell that he'll give in any minute now.

Then it happens! The guardian staggers out of the salamander's fiery breath and charges at it with unsteady steps and a war cry that sounds like a dying chicken. The healer beseeches him to come back but darkness immediately swallows everything up and prevents her from seeing the guardians following actions.

The lesser darkness lindworm and I charge the moment the cover of darkness descends. The lindworm alone is enough to kill the healer a few times over so I slam myself into one of the two shield-bearers. The last one remaining won't stand a chance at defending the healer alone and while in complete darkness.

I face off against the shield-bearer who is wildly swinging his short sword in hopes of hitting me in the darkness. Since evading those desperate blows isn't much of a challenge I patiently wait for an opening and give him a nasty bite. My fangs scrape against his armor as they sink in between two metal plates.

He doesn't liquefy into a bloody mess like the other adventurers. Probably saved by his high constitution stat. Still, the wound bleeds like a fountain and my repeated tail whips soon make him cave in.

He sinks to his knees exposing his neck and I sink my fangs into it without mercy. Meanwhile, the healer has succumbed to the lesser darkness lindworm's treacherous assault. The guardian is just standing there without moving.

The last shield-bearer doesn't even know that he's the only one left. He's not panicking yet and simply calls out to his companions. As the silence lasts longer he shuts up and tries to move towards one of the tunnels. Trying to escape, huh?

He stands no chance. The lesser darkness lindworm and I are upon him in a second. Being besieged by two lesser sub-dragons that he can't even see he doesn't last long.

After finishing him off the lesser darkness lindworm retracts her field of darkness. I'm curious why the guardian is still standing while being very evidently dead.

Upon closer inspection and without needing to rely on my thermal vision to see through the darkness I see something fascinating.

The salamander's flames had been hot enough to partially melt the metal armor while killing the guardian.

The metal began to harden again before he fell and turned him into a sort of grotesque statue.

"How is everyone doing?"

"I'm fine except that my eyes still hurt from that bright light those humans suddenly released. But I'm not so sure about muscle head and arrogant flame. They looked pretty beat up when we came, especially that muscle head."

"Don't kid yourself. I could have taken care of them all by myself. I did not need your help!"

That's arrogant flame, huh. The high-pitched voice sounds somewhat ridiculous and is dripping with pride. Looking at the sorry figure he's cutting with the still twisted leg he seems to be defending his pride.

"Come on, arrogant flame, we both know you were already backed into a corner by those humans. We saved you!"

"Nonsense! I am an all-powerful dragon. None could kill me."

"A lesser sub-dragon you mean? Not quite the dragon, are you?"

"I will be... one day..."

While those two are bickering about arrogant flame's potential demise with or without our help I walk over to the lesser lindworm. He's lying against the cavern wall and I can only tell that he's still alive by the rising and fall of his massive chest.

"You alright there?"

"I'll live, barely."

"The explosion magic got you pretty badly, huh."

"Damn those humans! How was I supposed to get close to them without getting blown away again? Such cowardly beings! They should face me one on one and I'd crush them like the puny humans they are!"

"That's probably why they didn't do that. No one wants to lose a fight from the get-go. Better luck next time I guess."
