章節 200: Sanguine venom (3)

A guttural and enraged roar sounds from the direction I am heading in. Should I turn around?

No. I want to see what is going on in this place.

I forge on ahead and reach a giant dome-like cavern. All the while many different roars echo through the tunnels sending the smaller monsters into a scurrying frenzy.

As the gray stone opens up and expands into a dome I can see a bunch of giant creatures facing off against each other.

Not too far away from me, a giant drake with brownish scales is roaring at the ceiling where a bright yellow amphiptere is hovering.

Behind the drake, a lindworm is also growling and whipping the ground with its spiked tail. It seems afraid of the amphiptere and stays close to the drake.

<That lindworm probably submitted to the drake after being defeated and now the drake is fighting for dominance with the amphiptere.>

I see. I nod my head in a very human way and want to continue observing but there is a problem...

The three sub-dragons aren't roaring at one another anymore. They are all looking straight at me. Am I interrupting something?

<Usually sub-dragons engage in an extended period of threatening one another in an attempt to assert dominance without needing to fight. You just interrupted them so they can't keep threatening one another or their pride would suffer.>

They aren't going to gang up on me, are they?

<No. They don't see you as a threat. They just don't want to be seen as hesitant. They'll clash now and then the winner will face you. Not that you are much of a foe to face.>

The drake roars once again but this time there is a lot more aggression in the sound. Its brownish scales begin to emit a grayish mist that forms a layer of protection around its body connecting seamlessly to the floor.

The lindworm immediately notices the change and retreats. It only stops once it has put a sizeable distance between itself and its boss.

Seeing the drake get ready for a real fight the amphiptere screeches like a bird of prey as it flies higher getting close to the ceiling of the cavern.

The drake growls in frustration as it realizes that the best moment to attack has already passed and its flying opponent has left its reach of attack. It angrily stomps on the ground sending tremors everywhere. The entire cavern shakes for a moment and small pieces of rock fall from the ceiling.

The amphiptere screeches once again as dozens of small rocks ricochet off it. Unlike the drake's scales that look very rough and sturdy, the amphiptere's are very delicate. Those yellow petal-like scales don't provide as much protection against raw force but they seem to be able to bounce back external forces to a certain degree and decrease the flying monster's air resistance.

The falling rocks are no bigger than a human's fist so they are no threat to the amphiptere but it can't stay up there forever, can it?

As if to answer my question the amphiptere begins to glow lighting up the cavern as if a miniature sun has just been born. Numerous stalactites made of light are formed across the ceiling.

My gut clenches and I get a very bad feeling just from looking at the bright cavern ceiling with all those radiant stalactites. Every instinct in my body is telling me to run so I turn and slither back into the tunnel I just came out of.

I barely reach the tunnel when I hear a screeching sound that didn't come from the amphiptere. I turn my head and see hundreds of radiant stalactites rain down from the ceiling at incredible speeds. The air itself is torn apart by the many projectiles that seem to have no end.

A pitiful wail sound from the edge of the cavern where I assume the lindworm is now enduring the barrage. Good thing I reached the tunnel in time or that AOE attack would have turned me into swiss cheese.

Navi, how would you judge the strength of these two?

<Both the amphiptere as well as the drake are amongst the strongest sub-dragons in this dungeon. The lindworm on the other hand is rather ordinary.>

Good to hear...

The rain of stalactites made of light stops only a few seconds after and once the dust settles a scene of carnage is revealed. The entire cavern floor is covered in ditches and cracks and most of the plants have been shredded and some gemstones have been smashed into bits.

The lindworm is lying pressed against a wall still trying to make itself small and reduce the surface of impact. Its body is bloodied but healing quickly. Since it took cover and wasn't in the attack's focus point it emerged alive and mostly well.

I shift my gaze to the center of the cavern where the drake has been standing and the barrage of stalactites has been the most intense.

The drake is still standing there. Its gaze is locked onto its flying opponent with unerring focus. It doesn't seem to have incurred any damage whatsoever and only the grayish most around it has thinned significantly.

The large four-legged beast snorts derisively as it turns to leave through one of the tunnels with the lindworm hurrying to catch up to it. The amphiptere doesn't exactly seem happy with the outcome of the confrontation but it waits quietly until the drake has left.

A draw? No, since one left and the other stayed it shouldn't be a draw. Seems more like the drake gave up because it couldn't be bothered to continue.

The amphiptere's gaze moves over to the tunnel entrance where I am still watching it. Now might be a good time to leave. This monster is way out of my league so challenging it makes no sense.

I am already slithering away when a screeching roar reaches me and causes me to pick up the pace.
