章節 176: Frail mishap (3)

After a few moments, I caught myself and answered.

"He universe made me think that. It took everything from me and left me here, forced to lie in this bed until the day I die."

"I'm sure that must be hard. Would you mind telling me your story?"

"Why?"

"I'd like to know what you went through to become like this."

"You want to know how I got this broken?"

"I want to know how you got hurt this badly."

I heard something in his voice that I hadn't heard in a long time. Sincerity. So I told him my story with all the details. I left nothing out.

"And that's where I am now. Fate has decided that I didn't deserve happiness and I am glad for anyone who is the same as me."

"You do deserve happiness! Everyone does! It's what all living beings should strive for. It gives purpose to our lives and allows us to constantly surpass our own limits."

His voice was grave when he said that. Like he honestly believed it. I didn't!

"Lies! Things like purpose and justice are just make-believe to keep the unfortunate from committing suicide."

"They aren't and I'll prove it to you."

He left me with those words. I thought he would just end up a passing thought in my remaining life but the next day he returned. Like last time he suddenly began talking.

"Justice and purpose take time so I thought I'd bring you something to pass that time without listening in on everyone around."

With a thunk, he set down something heavy on my bedside table. At the audible press of a button, an audiobook began to play with soothing voices reading line after line.

"What's that?"

"A machine that plays audiobooks."

"I can hear that. But why did you bring it?"

"So you could listen to something else other than what's going on inside this hospital. Maybe take your mind off things for a while."

I wanted to tell him to go away and let me listen to what I believed was far better for me but the voices that were reading the book were so lovely. There were two voices, one male one female. They switched between lines in perfect harmony and made the story seem so vivid, so real.

"I guess I'll allow it."

"Great. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to answer an invitation I received."

Three days passed. The audiobook indeed helped keep my mind off things but I quickly noticed the chatter of the nurses in the hallway at the end of the third day.

"Did you hear? Darwin, the famous adventurer, openly declined the invitation of that idol."

"Yes, I heard of that too. Normally adventurers politely decline while praising the performers who invited them but he even mocked her."

"I wonder what he meant when he said that he didn't wish to listen to a jealous child that couldn't endure not being the best by default."

The gossiping went on but was merely a repetition or rephrasing of what had already been said.

The nurses weren't aware of what Darwin meant with those words. But I was very well aware of the meaning behind those majestic words.

I felt like a beam of light had broken through the stormy clouds that had kept my life trapped in darkness. It gave me hope.

The next the I was already expectant of what the nurses would talk about. How had my tormentor reacted to that insult? I wanted to know so bad!

"She actually tried to publicly shame him! That girl really is too vicious. Saying that he was merely jealous of her beauty and popularity when all his popularity came from utilizing people's fears. He must feel humiliated after reading her statement."

"You didn't see his post this morning? He said that he had spoken only the truth and since she was denying it in such insidious ways he had no other choice but to involve the purity temple."

"Purity temple as in the one where people who lie get punished by the temple's powers?"

"Exactly that one! I heard that people who swear on something in that temple will immediately be subjected to an unavoidable probing and if they spoke any deceptions they will be burnt by holy fire."

"But what's the use? Even if she did do something nasty out of jealousy she simply won't accept the temple's invitation. I heard that the temple of purity never forces people to undergo judgment unless they enter the temple."

"It's true that she doesn't have to accept his challenge but she publicly announced that he had been defaming her. If she really chooses to ignore the temples invite she will seem guilty."

"Imagine what her fans would think if she declined. They all worship her as a goddess of purity and beauty. If she refuses to prove her innocence in the temple of purity then she might lose most of her fans and her career as an idol will be over."

"Losing your position as one of the biggest idols must be a hard pill to swallow."

"I'm curious, let's check if she already posted a statement online."

"Don't! You know the director will fire you immediately if he catches you going online during work hours."

"Sigh, you're right. I'll check during lunch break."

He really did it! When I heard that Darwin was able to get a public invitation to an idol concert I already suspected that he was an above-average adventurer but for him to be able to involve the purity temple... For the purity temple to send an invitation to the other party the one initiating this would have to be amongst the most influential of adventurers.

And Darwin was using that influence to help me? Why?

While I was waiting for the time to pass and more news of what was happening to reach my ears I kept asking myself that question.

Why?

Why was the world not trying to make me miserable anymore?
