章節 118: Lesser salamander (2)

<What are you referring to by 'this'?>

Don't play dumb with me. You didn't send me here at random! You sent me to this specific group hoping that pugilist would make me get that reaction so that I would do what you want, namely kill all those adventurers.

<We did, yes.>

Why?

<Order from up above. We can't have you going easy on adventurers for any reason.>

Does no one here care what I think about?

<We do so stop throwing a tantrum. In fact, emperor Vespasian has taken a liking to you and put all planned raids on villages on hold. He seems to be backing your opinion on leaving civilians out of it.>

Really? That's at least something. Still, I don't appreciate these kinds of missions with hidden objectives.

<Will you stop trying to spare intruders who enter the dungeon?>

Sigh, I'll try.

<Then we'll do our best to keep you away from missions with hidden objectives as you call them.>

Sigh, now you ruined my good mood from creating that lesser salamander and I still need to kill more people.

The lesser salamander is sitting in front of my waiting patiently. While it's looking at me the cruelty in its eyes is more subdued and I swear I can see a hint of affection towards me.

"Come on then. Let's go do our job and kill adventurers."

At my words, the lesser salamander excitedly spins around itself a few times and proceeds to call out to the dungeon lizards. Like a troop of loyal soldiers, the dungeon lizards approach and position themselves behind the lesser salamander.

I sigh a few more times for good measures but none of them seem to react to it. Before I embarrass myself more in front of these insensitive lizards I decide to start walking.

We weave through the first floor and quickly find a set of stairs descending into the gloom below. Reaching the second floor the silence from the first floor is replaced by a cacophony of sounds. A group of adventures is fighting close to the stairs and are audibly struggling.

I peek around a bend in the tunnel and count fifteen newbie swordsmen along with a level 40 swordsman who acts as their instructor. A group of only swordsmen? Prideful fools is what they are.

The ruckus I heard is caused by a single dungeon lizard that is surrounded by four swordsmen. They take turns stabbing and slashing at him but he easily dodges or intimidates them with a bite.

Without shield-bearers present, they can't block a monster's attack. While this strategy is a little awkward and time-consuming the lizard is visibly exhausted and won't last long.

The lesser salamander already wants to run past me and engage in a life and death struggle with those fools but I hold it back with an outstretched hand. If it runs out now it will just be cut down by the level 40 swordsman.

As far as I know, I am the only one here with a stealth skill. If I want to get the drop on him I'll have to go alone.

"Come on you failures! Are you swordsmen or do you just pretend to be? How is a single dungeon lizard capable of surviving against four of you? Hit it!"

Suddenly the swordsman who should act as an instructor starts to holler insults at the four swordsmen. His hollering is obnoxiously loud and causes all the others to avoid meeting his gaze. He has also conveniently turned his back towards us.

I motion for my lizard companions to follow me and sneak up on the yelling swordsman. His hollering makes for the perfect distraction and we close in on him quickly.

I ready my ground spikes as I am about to come within three meters of him. I am a little scared that he will detect me once I enter the three-meter radius around him like the pugilist before.

However, my worries are unfounded. I cross the three-meter mark and there is no reaction. I keep going and arrive directly behind the swordsman who is still exercising his loud voice.

I stab him in the back with my daggers and simultaneously trigger my ground spikes. Those jagged spikes rush out and bury themselves in his abdomen. He is pinned in place as I remove my daggers and jump backward.

As if waiting for the correct moment the lesser salamander moves to stand next to me and opens its maw releasing a jet of fire at the immobilized man. He screams in agony and seems to have forgotten that he is still holding a very sharp sword in his hand.

Admittedly, I too might forget about fighting back if I was backstabbed, run through by spikes, and subsequently roasted by a hot jet of flames. I nearly pity the poor guy but the way he yelled at the young swordsmen makes me launch a rock needle at his dominant hand.

His hand slips as the rock needle digs into it and he drops his sword making him completely unarmed. The lesser salamander closes its mouth and takes his minions to face the newbie swordsmen who are desperately charging over to help their instructor.

A single breath of scorching hot flames sends the swordsmen reeling back in fear. The heat that brushes against their faces directly singes some of their recently grown facial hair.

While the swordsmen are kept busy I finish off their instructor with a clean cut along the throat. Lifting his half-charred body I through it at the others and as expected they balk and get more disrupted.

The lesser salamander is a master at low-level crowd control. It charges together with the dungeon lizard to get in a few attacks and uses its fiery breath to force them to back off when the swordsmen attempt to launch a counterattack.

I see no reason for myself to get into that melee action so I sit back and create rock needles which I then launch at the despairing swordsmen.
