章節 116: Bullying the newbies (3)

Their probably practiced formation is completely broken up now. The remaining two shield-bearers are backing up into a wall. That will save them from an attack from the back with rock needles but it makes cooperation with the other survivors near impossible.

The pikemen are hesitant and stand in place like idiots. They have the numerical advantage but see no point in using it.

The scouts are the only ones to make the right call. They turn around and run like death is right on their heels. Doing so is incredibly selfish and will have some repercussions on their reputation but staying wouldn't help.

I advance towards the pikemen while swinging around my daggers like a madman. The slashes are completely random and hit nothing but air. However, the pikemen get further intimidated by this savage display of weapons and some of their pikes start to tremble as their wielders can't keep a steady grip.

I get into range of their pikes but half of them don't even react. The three that do react just thrust forward with all their might. I sheath one dagger and step back while grabbing one of the pikes pulling it back with me.

The poor fool who is holding that pike has fully committed to the thrust and falls forward carried by his own momentum. He's met right with my dagger and falls limply to the ground.

The other six grow incredibly pale at the sight of what just happened to their comrade. Had all of them thrust forward with steady hands and a good stance I would never have been able to do this.

Now, as I step into the range of their pikes once again no one moves to attack me. Instead, they eye each other hoping someone else will do something. Surprise, surprise, no one does.

I take another two steps and close the distance to them. Now they realize that doing nothing was a bad idea. I am behind the pointy end on their sticks. They are completely defenseless as I slash at them with my daggers. It barely takes me five seconds to dispatch them all.

The pikemen are done and only the runaway scouts and the shield-bearers that are backed against a wall are left. Without hesitation, I run after the scouts as fast as my legs can carry me. The shield-bearers won't get away, the scouts will if I don't catch up to them soon.

And catch up to them I do. Having a dungeon map that shows the positions of everyone on the floor is a truly, ridiculously unfair advantage. They don't see me coming as I barrel out of a side tunnel and tackle one of them to the ground sinking a dagger into his gut. His companion screams and backs away from us giving me the time to extract my dagger and stand up.

Scouts are a class focused on mobility and sensory ability. They do have some proficiency with either daggers or bows but they are generally one of the weaker classes when it comes to combat.

This scout is shakily holding a dagger and sends an energy dagger at me. That ability is so awesome! I want it too!

Instead of charging I deflect the energy dagger and keep my distance. Maybe I can prompt the scout to use that skill a few more times and learn it.

Seeing me keep my distance after deflecting his energy dagger the scout falls for my act and sends another energy dagger my way. With every energy dagger the scout launches he looks more exhausted. Energy daggers take stamina to generate, they would be great for someone like me with an enhanced stamina skill.

I try to concentrate on the energy dagger when it's created and replicate the feeling I get. Something is happening but I can't quite grasp it.

The scout grows increasingly exhausted and despair starts to surface on his face as he realizes that me keeping my distance won't save him. Once his stamina runs out, this game ends.

Right when the scout's body starts to sag down the wall he's been leaning on, I get a grasp on that feeling I've been trying to put my finger on. I let that feeling spread through me as I slash the air with one of my daggers.

Pure, utter terror shows on the young scout's face as an energy dagger cuts into his shoulder.

"It, it learned! How is this possible?!!!"

"It didn't learn, I learned. And I did so by copying you."

The second energy dagger doesn't hit his shoulder. It plunges straight into his fast-beating heart.

Another look at my dungeon map reveals that the two shield-bearers have disappeared. Several green dots are now lumbering around there. Did they get killed by monsters?

I make my way back there to verify my guess and indeed find the corpses of the two last survivors. Along with a group of dungeon lizards that are defensively surrounding a lightly glowing silhouette.

An evolving dungeon lizard? I don't know what I'm doing anymore. Something nestled deep inside me drove me to kill those adventurers. All of them. And now it makes me walk through the encirclement of dungeon lizards. I kneel, place my green hand on the glowing body before me, and whisper in a light but firm voice.

"Kill them... with fire."

I notice too late that my words might have unimaginable consequences. To both me and the dungeon lizard.

A torrent of energy rushes out of me and into the lizard. I feel a mysterious power drain out of me like from a pressure valve that has been opened. I can't keep kneeling anymore and fall weakly to the ground as I'm drained. But my hand remains on the evolving creatures back like it was glued on to it.

<Son of a...>

Moments before I black out the suction finally eases up and my hand slides of the lizard as darkness claims me.
