章節 105: Earth magic (3)

I connect to the earth and immediately focus my attention on the sloping walls of the pitfall. Bit by bit I change the pattern in my body to suit my purposes and feel the walls of the pitfall become smother as the marks of the shovels fade. Once I'm done I open my eyes and see that the pitfall has now become much harder to climb out of.

The goblins around me applaud but I get the feeling that they have little to no clue as to what I did. Only the goblin mage looks at me with a look of understanding. He must have felt the mana doing its work on the pit walls.

I'm a little astonished about how smooth things went myself. I can't explain where the knowledge of how to alter the pattern in my body came from but when I needed it the knowledge was just there.

<As Darwin told you before the pattern you create is just a thought-up manifestation of your imagination. There is no system to it besides the one you give it in your mind so obviously you just know.>

That's good then. Needing to learn the patterns for all the spells I want to cast would have sucked.

While I wait for my nearly depleted mp to recover I spend some time talking to the goblin mage. He evolved by throwing himself into a fire so the element he can use is naturally fire too.

It's just that... fireball isn't the solution to everything. The goblin mage seems to have built up a weird fascination for this one spell he likes to use. After nearly ten minutes of conversation, I manage to get him to think about other spells of the fire element he might be able to use. A partial success.

I also ask him if he ever considered using another element but according to him, he can't. The goblin mage is completely certain that he has no talent for other elements besides fire.

I decide not to push him on that and just tell him to focus on mastering fire magic. Which isn't an easy task. Like me, the goblin mage also struggles with mp depletion that hinders extended training.

After my mp are once again topped off, I move to the next pitfall and repeat the process. The goblins follow along and cheer whenever I finish and reopen my eyes but they still don't get what I did.

After having smoothened all the pitfalls in range I set my mind on a slightly more ambitious plan. I want to create a few outposts around the camp in order to detect and stop invaders early.

I'm thinking of using my earth magic to raise small bunker-like structures out of the ground with small entrances that only allow the goblins to squeeze in. Should human adventurers find these entrances they wouldn't be able to enter.

Plans in mind I find an open patch of ground and work my magic. I connect to the earth and command it to rise. The pattern within me changes according to my needs and I hear the rumbling as a wall of earth slowly begins to surface and rise from the ground.

My mp begins to run out before I have even completed a single wall of the bunker I plan to create. The drawback of using magic becomes very clear now.

Magic is far too dependant on mp and drains them so fast that it will take time to recover. To be a strong mage I'd need to have both a high level with a magic skill as well as an enormous pool of mp to fuel the spells I'd be constantly slinging.

Navi, humans have specific skills that can increase their mp. Do monsters have something similar or can we learn the skills the humans use?

<You are referring to the mana pool skill and its evolutions, yes? Monsters can forcefully learn those skills but what's the use? That skill series takes too much effort and the returns only start showing when you have evolved it twice. Just keep using up your mp and your training stat will increase.>

Right, when I checked my status in the camp I had an additional ten mp and now I already have an additional 23. Is it just me or do mp grow much faster than the other stat points?

<That is indeed so. An increase in mp is a much smaller change than an increase in other stats. Getting a single stat in any of the other categories is equivalent to getting ten in mp so of course, the growth is faster too.>

"The strong one has mastered the earth! Praise the strong one!"

While I was distracted by talking to Navi the goblins have grouped around the solid earth wall I raised and are touching it excitedly. One of their cheers gets my attention and I look upon those superficial fools.

When I increased the efficiency of the pitfalls they didn't understand a thing but the second I make something appear from the ground they look at me like I am god? They have much to learn, time for a lecture!

To pass the time until my mp have recovered I begin to tell the goblins that they cannot be too dependant on appearances. True change happens in places that are hard to observe and they must learn to look in the right places.

All the goblins present including the goblin mage are sunk deep in their own thoughts after my lecture. I decide not to disturb them when they are finally thinking about something substantial and raise the next earth wall.

After three more periods of rest, I create the bunker's four walls, small windows, and the ceiling. There's enough space inside for four goblins to crouch comfortably next to each other. I also confirm that the entrance is small enough that even the goblins need to squeeze in. No human will ever enter this bunker unless they break in forcefully.
