章節 95: A good nights rest
After my headache subsides to the level that I can form coherent thoughts again I find myself on a pile of pillows. Where are Vespasian and Guy?
"Do you feel better now? You must have gone through quite the ordeal in your tiny mind."
"Shut up, my head is still buzzing. What happened since I got respawned?"
"Heh, Guy and I watched my magnificent inferno claim the lives of those foolish intruders. He left a few hours ago and you've just been lying there ever since."
"So the missions over? Then why am I still here?"
"Recovering from an overstrained soul can be done anywhere so Navi probably decided to just let you rest here. Now that you have somewhat recovered it's time for you to head back. Bye."
And now, I'm in my room back in somewhat human form. I could go eat dinner at the employee dining hall but really, all I want to do right now is best the shit out of that crimson bear. I won't be able to have a good night's rest until I do so.
I flop down onto the bed and fall asleep immediately. The exhaustion from all the nights before must have hit me hard.
The bloody battle has begun. My sanguine boost activates by itself and starts to run on overdrive. As usual, I have no clue control over my body as I throw myself into battle.
The common monsters I have to fight before the crimson bear didn't get any weaker. In fact, they got stronger instead.
Every time I fight them I need to give it my all to beat each and every one of them. Do they scale with my own strength?
I rip and tear through some opponents, strangle others, crush some more, and let the rest be cut open by my blood edge. This place is a scorching hell and the ground is slick with blood spilled by all the monsters around. Making them slip occasionally is very easy.
Ultimately I meet the crimson bear in the middle of the blood-soaked basin. Different from the other monsters this one doesn't seem to have grown much stronger. I can only assume that it acts as a test I need to pass to level up my sanguine boost skill. Making it scale with my strength would make no sense.
The crimson bear roars with rage and charges at me. I send three energy fangs its way and they manage to penetrate the thick fur but only leave shallow wounds that won't affect the bear much. Its paw descends on me as it tries to crush me into a bloody pulp.
I evade and lash out with my tail whip skill leaving a bloody gash on its front leg. The bear rises on its hind legs and tries to smash down on me again. I can see the scorching paw print on the ground and I don't want to be hit by that.
My body seems to share my opinion as it links back and launches a blood edge at the towering bear. The bear is standing on its hind legs with its vulnerable underside wide exposed. The bloody arc hits the bear's belly and leaves a deep cut. Blood gushes out like a flood but I doubt that will be the end of it.
And indeed, the bear drops back down on all fours and growls. The low guttural growl echos across the battlefield and the crimson bear's fur lights up.
The smell of charred meat comes from the bear and my thermal detection goes out of control. The bear is igniting its fur to cauterize the wound that would surely kill him due to my poison being added to the attack. His abilities are a perfect counter to mine!
I fire another blood edge at the crimson bear's face and the dumb colossus actually breathes fire! Most of the bloody arc is evaporated and the rest just splashes in the bear's face.
The blood gets into the beast's eyes and makes it lose its sight. Taking advantage of that I move around him sending energy fangs at the edges of the cauterized wound on its underbelly.
The energy fangs don't do much damage by themselves but they aggregate the cauterized wound and make it break open again.
The crimson bear rages and breathes fire, stomps, and thrashes around. It can't see me but by just attacking everything in its surroundings it still manages to get quite close.
I'm pretty sure that I have some second-degree burns from all the heat and steam wafting around us. Thankfully the crimson bear doesn't seem to have an unlimited supply of stamina and magic. He's panting and the lit-up fur loses its glow.
It's still hot but that's due to the sun above and not the bear's powers. The hulking colossus looks spent as it uses one of its front legs to rub at its eyes. It manages to clear away some of the blood and its beady eyes quickly find me.
Hate and fury are seated deeply in those beady little eyes. The bear roars again and charges at me but its strength is visibly spent.
I easily evade its clumsy attempts to crush me under its paws. At an opportune moment, I launch another blood edge and open a deep gash in its side. Blood spurts out like a fountain and the bear roars in frustration.
Its matted fur begins to glow again as it tries to force the powers within itself to awaken once again but instead of embers, only sparks are generated. I feel an unnatural hint of cruelty rush through me as I whip out with my tail and hit it straight onto the open wound.
The colossus opens its maw but only a whimpering sound escapes. The tyrant of this scorched wasteland falls defeated and the blood keeps flowing.
I bathe in that blood. My body is baptized by the dying bear's lifeblood. My sanguine boost explodes in my veins and I feel like a barrier has been breached.
It feels so great that I don't even bother to open my status for confirmation. I am certain, I have broken through and my skill has reached level three!
