5.23% Death Goddess Reborn / Chapter 11: The Chipmunk

章節 11: The Chipmunk

The little raven soared into the sky. After traveling for a day, it reached a dense forest filled with world trees. Its keen eyes preyed on a small chipmunk in-between a bush and Swooped down on it.

"Shoo," Ambai chased it away, but the raven clawed at its prey and flew away.

"Hey, let go of it!" she ran after it. After chasing it for minutes, the crow tossed the little chipmunk down.

She rushed over and picked it up, but it bit her hands and scurried away into a nearby bush. "Rude." she pouted. "Eh, that's life."

"Dinko, here," a man's soft voice was heard nearby.

Peeping through the foliage, she found a young man donned in golden armor, holding the raven in his palm. He untied a small scroll from its feet and pocketed it.

'Who is that?' She thought in wonder.

The small chipmunk returned. With its tail upright, the little creature scratched her shoes.

"Go away." She shooed the creature. Twigs snapped in her struggle. "Go back to your home," she whispered, but the chipmunk kept clinging to her shoes.

She turned back to find the man with the raven had disappeared. "Odd."

"Prince, what are you doing here?" someone whispered from behind her.

Ambai gasped. "You…. You scared me," she said, holding her pounding heart.

"Sorry, your highness." His pastel pink hair cascaded over his face as he bowed.

"It's okay." She mumbled, kicking her feet vigorously.

Ambai peered at the guy as he was concentrating on the little chipmunk by her feet. 'He looks familiar. Where have I seen him?' She scratched her head. 'Ah, he was the one who died protecting me from that demon!!'

'A lot of things have changed when I came back,' she sighed.

"Your highness…. that is not a chipmunk," the man mumbled.

The man glanced up at her curiously. "Your highness, I think this is a Gri."

"Squeak, squeak," a creature screamed.

But her gasp interrupted his thoughts. A glaring number five was shinning red on his forehead. Shaking her head, she pulled back and leaned against a tree trunk.

Noticing her discomfort, the man stepped back. "I have caused you inconvenience, please excuse me," he bowed and walked away.

But Ambai was still in a daze. "The numbers are back," she whispered.

"Yo, you skipped again?" Sylas shouted from afar.

Waving at him, she hobbled over the little chipmunk. "I had a creepy shadow following me around."

"Your new study mate?" Syslas said in a whisper.

"YES, that guy is—," She saw the said demon leaning against a tree, "the sweetest… yes, the sweetest," she said with a fake smile.

"Your face looks like you have cramps." Sylas snickered.

Ambai swatted his shoulders and pouted.

"So… what were you talking to Kaden?" He shuffled.

"Who is Kaden?"

"Tsk, Kaden is the guard that you were flirting with," Imposter Zhong said. With narrowed eyes, he whispered, "You seem to enjoy his presence."

"I do enjoy being in the presence of humans." She snapped back. 'Flirting?' gritting her teeth, she glared at him.

Sylas rolled his eyes. "Curious, do you like him or not." He nodded towards Imposter Zhong.

Ambai shot him a double-take. "Of course I don't." Scrunching her face, she gave the devil a sidelong gaze. 'Nope,' she shook her head.

"Ahem, who is this Kaden?"

"He is like that best warrior of our times. One day—one day I will become stronger than him." He clenched his fists.

Ambai patted his shoulders, "You can be."

Sylas blushed at her remark.

With a small smile, she turned towards the devil. A small leaf stood out in his long black hair, cascading down his back.

"Em, there is something in your hair," she pointed.

Imposter Zhong kept fiddling with his hair but failed to find the main culprit.

Sighing out loud, Ambai detangled it from his hair. "Here." She dropped the leaf. Their eyes met and she could see a small tinge of red in his pupils. Ruby red, just like something she had seen in her dreams.

"Zhong, you…." She softly cupped his face. He peered at her with his eyes wide open.

"Ew." Sylas cringed.

Blinking rapidly, she darted off. She held her pounding heart. "I think I am sick."

"Eru, wait for me!!" her new friend shouted and shuffled behind.

"Where the hell were you?" Huyt shouted as they reached the training tree.

Hunching down, Ambai held her stomach and moaned. "I—I was not feeling well master."

"Do not give me stupid reasons," He shouted to her face.

"But that's the truth, master," she blinked her eyes.

"NOT another word." He snapped.

She slouched over and followed him. The entire class was waiting for her on top of a huge inclined tree.

"Today's class is an important day. You will be summoning your rides," Huyt said.

"Oh gods, finally, I have been waiting years for this. I hope I summon a griffin like Kaden," Sylas said.

Ambai gave him a confused look. 'What is that?'

"A Spirit pet," Imposter Zhong whispered in her ears.

She shot him a double-take. 'Did this guy hear my thoughts?'

"Yes," He hissed with a demonic smirk.

Her eyes went wide. 'My privacy is gone,' she cried internally.

His minty breath blew into her ears. "Don't fret; I can only hear you sometimes."

"Very reassuring." She rolled her eyes and peered up ahead. Her teacher called Sylas upfront and drew a complicated rune in air. But nothing spectacular happened; he trotted back next to her.

"I thought I had it." he clenched his jaw and kicked a small stone. She patted his shoulders.

"Zhong, come here," Huyt screamed.

"Watch and learn," he whispered before walking upfront.

"Watch and learn my ass." she stuck her tongue out.

The ruin in the air started to shine and a small portal opened in the sky. The sound of heavy hoofs echoed out of it. A small horse jumped out of the portal. It landed next to the devil and nuzzled its head.

It neighed and spread its beautiful translucent wings, red veins forming a pattern similar to a butterfly.

"A unicorn." She gasped.

"Good job. Now bond with it," Huyt said.

Imposter Zhong sliced his hands and dropped a droplet of blood on its forehead. The blood shone and formed into a small rune on the unicorn's head.

"Next, Erudite, come here,"

"YES!" she bounced upfront. "What should I do now?"

"Touch the circle,"

Biting her lips, she softly touched the invisible membrane of the rune, and the wait began. Seconds went by, but nothing happened. "Am, where's my Unicorn?"

Huyt shook his head. "Better luck next time."

Dejected Ambai walked to back of the class. 'I guess I don't have a mount,' she thought with a sigh.

Suddenly she heard a small squeak near her foot.

It was the same chipmunk that she rescued. "You're back, you rude thing." It started scratching her riding boots.

"Shoo," she stepped away from it, but the little thing kept following her. After a while, it jumped on her shoulder and bit her neck.

"Ow, stop it you little..." she pulled the little bugger, but it refused to let go of her flesh.

"Stop pulling it," Huyt shouted and rushed towards her. Holding its small body in his palm, he drew a rune. Droplets of her blood levitated over to the little thing's forehead. It formed into a golden rune and disappeared.

"This is your mount," Her master said.

"WHAT!!"
