chapter 13| Cas
"Okay so we're about to pull up to the border, this is the only road you can take to Central as the rest of the land is covered in water" Irina explained "We're going to meet two guards, they may ask you a few questions but they'll probably talk to me as they know me" I nodded my head in understanding.
Hibi yawned in boredom "So do I wave to them or some shit?" Irina shook her head.
"Actually they're still holding a grudge against you since the last time you..." She trailed off, turning pink in embarrassment. Hibi threw her arms up in disbelief.
"Oh come on, that was one time!" Irina raised an eyebrow.
"His pubes are now pink for life" Hibi flipped her hair sassily.
"Exactly! he should be thanking me" She huffed.
"Anyways, you lie down low at the back, I doubt they'll check the backseats but just stay out of sight just in case" Hibi nodded.
Irina took a deep breath as we finally came in the line of sight of the huge gate, guarded by two guards. She came to a stop and rolled down both of our windows. One of the guards went around to Irina's window and the other walked to mine.
As soon as he came into my view I had to breathe through my nose aggressively to cover my laughter. He had a thick beard that was bright neon pink, with pink eyebrows, if you looked closely even his nose hair was bright pink with more strands of pink hair falling into his face through his helmet.
"Name" He demanded. I cleared my hysterics out of my throat before coughing.
"Caspian".
"No last name?" I shook my head.
"Not that I know of" He raised an eyebrow.
"Okay sir, where are you headed this fine evening" I shot him a convincing smile.
"Just on my way to central," He wrote something down on his clipboard.
"And what is your business at the capital?" I froze up for a second before blurting out something on the spot.
"To find love".
He looked much more sceptical now "To find love?" He repeated, I nodded.
"To find love" He snorted.
"Well good luck son. Hope you find what you're looking for" He mocked as he proceeded to start walking away with his buddy.
"And I hope you find how to get rid of that ridiculous colour" Irina's head snapped to me in alarm before covering her mouth. The guard stopped in his tracks and turned one head to look at me.
"What did you say?"
I beamed at him "I said I hope you enjoy your evening" He narrowed his eyes at me.
"Yeah, that's what I thought. They both walked to their respective places and started opening the gates.
Irina burst into laughter as soon as we were out of hearing range. Hibi joined her as she came out of her hiding place. "Gosh that was gold" She giggled wiping the tears from her eyes.
"I wish I saw the look on his face when he said that" Hibi cried.
"Trust me it was gold to" I assured her.
We all got into a comfortable silence until Hibi broke it with a tap on my shoulder. "By the way Caspian, I'll have you know pink is a wonderful colour".
"Well she's knocked out," I said referring to Hibi being out cold in the backseat. Irina looked through the rearview at her before smiling.
"Eh she's deserved it, I doubt she's slept a wink in the last few weeks" My eyes widened.
"Weeks? How is that even..."
"Possible?" She spared another glance at a sleeping Hibi "She's a wonder woman this one, I don't know how she does it" I could feel the tenderness in her words when she spoke about her.
"Where was she these past few weeks?" I asked curiosity taking over.
"In hearts actually" She laughed in a matter of fact tone.
"What was she doing there?" I questioned, why would she go somewhere where she is clearly in danger?
"She was getting a ldojshidoh for me" She mumbled one of the parts even though I strained my ears to hear it.
"What was that?" She sighed.
"She was getting a love letter for me" She admitted solemnly. I gasped dramatically.
"Irina! How scandalous, what would your husband think?" She blushed a dark red.
"I don't know? I'll ask him in my next letter" Confusion lowered my brows but I slowly pieced together what she meant but I was still pretty confused.
"So you mean he's the one-
"Writing the letters? Yes," She answered. I felt myself suddenly getting invested in Irina's backstory.
"But if he's there why aren't you, there with him?" I felt the mood darken.
"I was banished" She stated with a cold voice before I could start asking questions she silenced me with her hand. "You don't have to ask, I deserved it" My head hurt at the thought of Irina doing something malicious enough that she'd be banished.
"I doubt you did" I knew of my mother's unjust judgement. That must be the case here, I convinced myself.
"No no, I did. Caught red-handed stealing from your mother" My eyes widened, she sighed "Look it's a long story but-
"I have time" I snapped.
She chuckled "Okay okay" I leaned a bit forward so I wouldn't miss anything she said.
"I was working at the castle as a dressmaker, I'm sure some of your childhood outfits were even crafted by my hands, my husband was a warrior, constantly going off to fight battles your parents often created. And he received no pay but 'the honour of serving his kingdom'" She rolled her eyes "The queen was squeezing every last penny out of the kingdom to get taxes to fund for who knows what so we were both dirt poor".
Her eyes started glittering "But we were in love, I was young, broke and terribly stupid and blinded by my love for that man that I decided to forget to use my head" She sighed "Henrik had just saved up from a years worth of side jobs to afford a ring to propose to me with" My eyes briefly caught sight of the cheap but stunning jewel that she indeed wore on her dainty finger "And we were all set to get married except I didn't have a dress, Henrik insisted he'd love me in rags but I was angry".
Her fists clenched the wheel "Angry at my terrible circumstances and angry at my superiors, how was it fair that we all lived in poverty whilst they went out of their way to cause more drama between kingdoms" An evil glint caught her eye "So I stole from the queen's cloth pile, not to much. Just enough that I could make a beautiful dress for my wedding day" She looked slightly to the side.
"I was caught before I even left the palace".
"The queen stripped me of all my clothing and whipped me in the kingdoms central before the crack of dawn. She then threw the stolen cloth at my nude and battered body and told me that I had an hour to flee the kingdom and if even a drop of my blood hit the precious snow of her kingdoms ground..."
"She'd feed Henrick to the dogs".
