Simultaneously, volunteers were summoned to clean the streets, despite this being the crucial time of the harvest season. These supposed 'volunteers' were forcibly removed from their croplands, away from their efforts to rebuild war-torn country sides or tend to their families. Instead, they were handed brooms and set to work on the streets without any compensation.
