"AAHH!!"
One by one the delinquent group was either crushed or eaten. During the chaos Ryla and Lou ran over to Gerald. Ryla shook him violently, "Wake up, we have to run!"
Lou was crying whilst tugging at a pant leg, "Papa. . . Wake up, kill the monster."
Gerald's eyes flicked, he weakly rested a his hand on Ryla's, "Run. . . escape while you can. If it targets you, you won't be able to escape."
"Then come with us, you can be back in top shape in no time! Who will care for us if you go?"
Lou spotted the scale and scrambled for it, "Tilia said it will protect me. It can protect us!"
She held it tightly while running back to Gerald.
The Barveth crunched the final delinquent and turned its head to the three. It stomped over. Opening its mouth it prepared to eat the three.
Lou held up the scale while shaking, "Protect us!"
~ ~ ~
"Papa!"
Tilia's ears twitched and she shot up alert. Immediately she sprinted towards the origins of the shout, "That was Lou!"
She chanted as she ran, "May the winds guide my path and lift my feet!"
Yellow runes covered her body and her speed increased. Yet she continued, "May the road be free of obstacles, and the trees guide my way!"
The runes doubled in amount and glow. Her speed increased further as she ran. Soon she was free from the forest, allowing her to run full sprint without fear of tripping.
Her heart was beating fast, she should have stayed with them! Ignoring a gut feeling was a terrible mistake!
She heard another scream, though it wasn't Lou's.
She bolted towards the direction. As she ran she spotted an unnaturally large hill. She ran up the hill and jumped off it. As he flew through the air she noticed an opening in the side of it.
She turned her body mid air and landed, her feet sliding against the ground due to the momentum. She looked up and her eyes widened, she saw the BOSS Barveth about to consume Gerald and his family.
All her distance protection skills required a long casting time. All the quick ones only protected her or around her. She reached out a hand, helpless.
She wanted to protect them! No. . . she needed to!
Twom~
A strange brown and orange energy surrounded the family. The Barveth was unable to break this with its mouth.
Lou looked up, an energy surrounding them. Her eyes widened, the scale protected her!
Tilia chanted, "My bloodthirst rises, my rage fuels me. May my enemies fall by my hands, as dead as they could ever be."
Red runes covered Tilia. As they spread across her body the yellow ones faded. She jumped towards the Barveth, slamming her fist into its jaw.
The Barveth stumbled back with a strange sound. Tilia landed and looked over to the family. She tossed a potion, "You know what to do, leave this place. I'll handle this."
The strange energy faded and Ryla fumbled with the potion, "Thank you!"
Gerald's eyes opened upon drinking the potion. He looked up to see Tilia fighting the monster. After the urge of Ryla he began to flee alongside his family.
He looked back and mumbled, "It was a shield. . . She wields a shield. . . !"
Tilia held a glowing brown and orange shield. She felt the energy coursing through it and shook her head. This was the energy, the same thing that she had used before against Rygeth.
She had been going about it wrong, it wasn't guarding against attacks that awoke it. It was protecting another. The sole goal of the guardian. It was no wonder her past efforts were fruitless.
The Barveth swung its tail into Tilia. She raised the shield and blocked the blow.
Twom~
Tilia didn't budge a millimeter. Instead the tail bounced off the shield. Tilia experimented a little, "I don't need to hold it. . ."
The shield spun in a circle in front of her hand. The Barveth grew angry and attempted to chomp her into two.
Tilia pictured the barrier around the family when she awoke this. The shield expanded around her. Surrounding her in the shape of a prism. Though it was odd. It looked like a mountain.
The Barveth's head bounced off the energy. It roared with anger.
Tilia formed it back into its shield shape, "How far can you go?"
She uppercutted the air, the shield followed with the motion and slammed into the jaw of the Barveth. The Barveth stumbled back.
Tilia drew back her fist to her waist and punched forward. The shield slammed into the Barveth's chest.
She jumped into the air and changed the shape of the shield, making it take form back into the mountain. This time, it was upside down.
She fell onto the Barveth's head, the tip of the energy pierced its hard skull and it slammed into the ground.
The force also crushed its skull. Tilia did insane critical damage and killed the beast. Her levels increased and she jumped off the beast.
"You have caused me more trouble. This is your own fault."
Tilia collected the loot, she was quite pleased with the large amount of scales that dropped. She now had enough for a full set of armor.
Another item caught her interest, it was a diamond shaped object that was slightly clear. It was a deep crimson, similar to the scales dropped by the monster. Streaks of brown flowed through it, like a marble.
She found she was unable to appraise it, much to her dissatisfaction. She stored it into her inventory, she would have it appraised later.
She then looked at the bodies of the delinquent group, "A shame you all couldn't learn your lesson. Perhaps you would still be alive. . ."
The energy faded as she walked away, for now she would check to make sure the family was okay.
~ ~ ~
Kan'na released a spell. Lines of wavering mana began to flow into a ball. The ball solidified and began to crackle with sheer power. It was so powerful that bolts of pure mana began to spark around it.
She monitored every little step it made. After a few seconds the lines of mana faded, leaving only the ball of power.
Her mentor asked, "What's the purpose of this?"
Kan'na replied, "To test the power of my new barriers, and it."
She tapped her foot on the ground and several thick barriers surrounded the ball.
The ball was something she had been wanting to test out for a long time. It was inspired by the process behind an Atomic bomb.
Since such a bomb required a specific material, she couldn't fully replicate it. Instead she opted for how it worked. By causing a chain reaction of mana types within the ball it should theoretically explode with massive power.
She snapped her fingers and the ball dropped. It hit the ground and. . . nothing happened.
She sighed, "Another failure-"
BOOOOMMM-!!!
An explosion of pure mana occurred, it slammed into the barrier and easily shattered the first.
Kan'na made a mental note of that, the first barrier was her weakest prototype. However the second was built specifically to contain this.
The mana spread until it hit the second barrier. The second barrier pulsed several times, yet it remained steady.
Her mentor praised, "A barrier that grows stronger by eating the mana it gets hit by. A fantastic barrier against spells."
Kan'na responded, "My barrier that used to tear apart spells proved ineffective at one point. So I figured I needed something else."
Her mentor continued, "Still, what is this explosion?"
Kan'na explained, "I made several different types of mana react with each other. I made it specifically so when one mana type reacted with another, a different type would react. Thus a I made a loop of constant reaction."
"So when does it end?"
"When the mana types decay from so many reactions."
Five seconds later the explosion shrunk and disappeared. Kan'na released her barriers and nodded happily, "Success!"
Her mentor pondered for a moment, "Care to show the Concatenations?"
Kan'na handed her a scroll in which she had written down the spell beforehand.
Her mentor studied the scroll but frowned at a certain part, "This right here, what is this?"
Kan'na looked over to where she was pointing, "Oh, it's how I made the mana types separate."
"You separated the types?!"
"Yeah."
"You can't just separate mana types. Mana is only alive because of how the mana types flow together and make Mana. A complex Magic Concatenation couldn't separate a single mana type!"
"How do you utilize mana types then?"
"By filtering them out! You would slowly remove the other types until you are left with the one you want. That's why I wanted to see this, I wondered how you managed to make a filter for different types within the same concatenation!"
"Yet I did it regardless? So what does that mean?"
"Quick, show me the exact writing. The same way you created it."
Kan'na formed the runes at the tip of her fingers.
Her mentor's eyes widened, "These. . . these aren't normal runes!"
