Though Erik had vaguely welcomed the idea of participating in the interrogations, it only took a few days for his enthusiasm to vanish.

He would enter the cell of an inmate with a colleague, handcuff them, escort them to the interrogation room and then wait in a corner as a safeguard in case the prisoner became violent in the course of the questioning. At regular intervals he was supposed to remind the officers that it was time for a pause: interrogations had fairly regular procedures that included breaks for the officers and medical checks on the prisoner. Sometimes, however, the officers preferred to continue, and in that case Erik had to go on waiting.
