James looked away: “Um, this is an open question, to tell the truth.”

“What do you mean?”

He cleared his throat: “Sophie... this is the first time we meet, but Amanda has told me quite a bit about you. I know you wouldn’t do anything to put us in danger. I know that if we gave you a chance to leave you would go back to living a quiet life as you always have.”

“Except that I can’t, can I? Now I’m a fugitive. Is that what you want to tell me?”

“Not just that. There is, indeed, the problem of your identity, which is now compromised, but I don’t think it would be difficult to give you false papers and a new identity in another part of Europa, where no one knows you.
