章節 44: ONCE BITTEN, TWICE SHY
Phyllis tried her possible best to make Melanie feel comfortable around her so that they could build a good relationship based on trust and respect for each other. She was able to get Melanie to open up to her about her life and her dreams. So one hot afternoon, three days to the trial, during lunch she told Phyllis that due to her disappointment in life, she had tried to commit suicide by hanging herself in someone's farm but she was saved by an old man who happened to be passing by at that moment. "The man saw me with a rope walking towards his farm and talking to myself because he was also going there but he slowed down so that I would not hear his footsteps so that I would run from that direction. Just as I was about to tie the rope to a tree, he came from nowhere and calmly asked me what I thought I was doing. I broke down into uncontrollable tears and he hugged me. He told me to calm down and relax.
When I got sober, he sat me down under the tree and told me that, life is full of uncertainty and that everyone has their own but the difference between them and I was the fact that I was about to give up. He told me, I should persevere no matter what happens because time and chance happens to everyone and I don't know when they will happen to me. I helped him to weed his farm and get some foodstuffs. I then carried them to his house and he gave me some money and asked me to visit him anytime I wanted. His children lived in the United States so they employed me to care for him because he allowed me to talk to them anytime they called. I was being paid well until the man died. His family took over the house and sacked me after his children returned to the United States. I lost contact with them and my life got miserable sometime after that."
Phyllis sighed with tears in her eyes. All she could say was "wicked people have made this beautiful world an ugly place to live in. I'm sorry, Mel." Melanie smiled and said, " I have also met wonderful people like you and Barrister Manford as well. You know these challenges aren't as painful and disheartening as being disappointed by a man you trust enough to give your heart to." Phyllis giggled and said, " this matter ehn? Hmmmm! Don't go there." I have personally been through a lot and decided not to love again until Honourable Manford came into my life."
Melanie smiled at her because she had noticed that Manford didn't just love her but she respected and adored her as well. "Do you know I have slept with a woman for money before?" Phyllis opened her mouth and eyes wide out of shock but was dumbfounded. Yeah, things were tough for me and besides every man I dated was just a disappointment so I agreed to be sleeping with the woman when she approached me with her proposal. She took me to her house which was bigger than this one with three different Toyota Rav4 models. I was introduced to her housekeeper as her niece so I was treated with respect. She would invite me to her room every night or afternoon if she's at home. She would make me go naked while she's also naked and would let me lick her vagina for sometime and then sucked her breasts too. "Mel, you're a very strong young woman and you have won my admiration and respect." Phyllis said with a gloomy face. Denzel and Amelia walked in on them as they were busily chatting. Amelia hugged Phyllis and told her she missed her. She then exchanged pleasantries with Melanie and they both introduced themselves. Denzel and Amelia joined the table but Melanie decided to excuse them since she had already finished eating and she needed to give them the privacy to talk. Denzel asked her to remain seated since they were going to have a discussion with her.
Denzel asked permission from Melanie for Amelia to join their discussion and she permitted her to. He told Melanie that the trial was in three days and they needed to prepare her for it. " I want you to know that, the trial will bring life to old wounds and the defense lawyer could even make you feel guilty but I want you to be bold and relaxed in the face of that. Don't let anyone or anything intimidate you." Phyllis and Amelia who's our sister would be in court to support you." She was quiet for a while because it had dawned on her that she might be tormented with some questions and revelations which could traumatise her but Amelia held her hands and with a smile said "all is well Sweetheart. We shall surely overcome. Don't ever think you're in this alone. Melanie thanked her and cleared the table.
Melanie, " we have a surprise for you, "Phyllis said with joy. Amelia had agreed to employ you as her receptionist after the trial and My Honourable hubby and I have also agreed to buy forms and enrol you into the Kumasi Technical University for you to get a Diploma in Fashion Design since you want to be a fashion designer so that you would be our designer." Both Amelia and Denzel broke into laughter and Denzel sarcastically asked " so both of you still want more clothes?" " Go and get dressed Amelia and I are going to spoil you today." Phyllis told Melanie. They said good bye to Denzel but he insisted on going with them so he rushed to sit at the drivers seat of his car. Amelia asked Phyllis to join him there so that she and Melanie together with Beryl would sit at the back seat.
Phyllis told Denzel to drive them to the saloon so that Melanie would fix her hair and do both pedicure and manicure so he drove the to Diva Saloon where the hairstylist recommended that her hair be braided instead of fixing a weave. So they braided her hair in the corn row style and then did her manicure and pedicure as well. Denzel, Amelia and Phyllis sat in a nearby restaurant waiting for her since all the bills were paid before they worked on her. They were in shock when they saw Melania walking towards them because she looked extremely gorgeous and chic. All of them were happy to see her transformation but Phyllis was scared because she thought she would seduce Denzel and the thought of that made her uncomfortable especially when Denzel started gushing about her.
Amelia took her for a photoshoot in a nearby photo studio. Denzel saw the sudden change in Phyllis' mood and burst into laughter when Amelia and Melanie left. "Sweet Phyl, relax! Please relax! I wouldn't go near Melanie neither would she come near me. Please trust me on this though I know it wouldn't be easy for you to since I have already broken your trust but please give me an iota of your trust. Don't make our marriage suffer due to your insecurities or don't let her suffer anymore because she has been through a lot." He kissed her passionately and stared into her eyes for a while. He later took Beryl from her and asked her to go with him to the photo studio so that they could also have a shoot with their daughter.
They went to the African Pot Grill and Bar for dinner. Amelia noticed the change in Phyllis' mood so she asked her to escort her to the washroom. Amelia asked her what her problem was and she told her that she was afraid of what could happen between Melanie and Denzel since they were going to be living with her. "I'm afraid of a possible relationship between them. I know I sound crazy but I'm so afraid that the thought of that, brings chills into my heart." Amelia hugged her and whispered in her eye, " he's a good man who has so much respect for you. Even if he decides to cheat, he definitely wouldn't do it with Melanie because in case you don't know your hubby fears losing you. So relax and enjoy your marriage. You and I are going to treat her like our little sister and help her develop. Take a chill pill." Phyllis thanked her. Melanie came to call them because Beryl was crying.
