章節 22: THE ACCOUNTANT
Denzel had not been his old self after his discharge from the hospital because he had been traumatised by the kidnappers. He lived in shock and denial of the incident. He was also found to be in deep thoughts with less concentration whenever they try to have a conversation with him. They also realised he avoided and withdrew from them especially Phyllis who was shaken by this development in the man he loved so much so that she was always crying or sad because she couldn't deal with his withdrawal. Denzel became afraid of darkness and therefore, they had to make sure his lights were always on.
So when the Police arrived, Mr. Richards invited the doctor who was treating Denzel to join them since he had arrived to check up on Denzel's response to treatment. The doctor told the Police to give Denzel the time to recover especially from the trauma else their questions might cause a relapse in his health because he had been traumatised. The police therefore asked to ask Mr. Richards a few questions which he responded to accurately. The police asked him about his abandoned warehouse and he told them that a few people including his Accountant and some few old workers knew about that warehouse because that's where he started building his company from. The police also told him that, they went to Denzel's network service provider to gather information on the calls and text messages he received during the day of his disappearance and they saw from the list that, Mr. Richards office line was the last number to have called his phone which he responded to and spoke for two minutes, twenty-seven minutes before the call ended. So they asked if, Mr. Richards called him and what they spoke about if he really called him.
He was quiet for sometime and spoke with shock in his voice because he was getting suspicious of his Accountant and that baffled him. He told the police that, he had a meeting with some foreign investors in his office that day together with his Accountant. So after the meeting, he decided to escort them when they closed but his Accountant waited behind because he told him he had a discussion with him so he came back to his office to have the discussion with his Accountant and when he opened the door to his office, he saw his Accountant, on his office phone which made him angry because he thought he had received his call without his authorisation but he told him he called Mr. Richards secretary to order food for him since he didn't like the food that was served during the meeting and he was too hungry to finish with his discussions with Mr. Richards before he gets food to eat. He said, the delivery guy brought his food twelve minutes after he hanged up which got him surprised but he just that the restaurant and the delivery guy were just fast to have brought the food that early.
The police then asked Mr. Richards if he thought his Accountant, was a suspect in Denzel's abduction and he responded in the affirmative. He told the police that his reasons for suspecting him was his findings in Phyllis' report on the man. Mr. Richards told the police that Denzel and Amelia had been investigating the Accountant since the police told them that Phyllis' accident was an attempted murder and that's why Amelia and Phyllis had to travel to Dubai for a while. He also added that, he even heard that Denzel was attacked on the day he took the ladies to the Airport and the police took him into hiding with police protection.
The police confirmed Denzel's attack and thanked Mr. Richards for his time and cooperation. They told him they'll come back after some few days to check up on Denzel and if possibly ask him some questions to help them in their investigations. They then asked to be excused and left the Richards mansion. Mr. Richards was so sorrowful because to him everything pointed to his Accountant being behind Denzel's and Phyllis' attempted murder.
Just as he was in deep thoughts about that, his Accountant called him. He told Mr. Richards he had been trying to contact Denzel for them to discuss the legality of a proposal he had written but his calls are not going through. Mr. Richards told him, he hadn't seen nor heard from Denzel in a while and he was even getting worried since he needed him to represent him in a legal battle he would be engaging in soon. He therefore told the Accountant to inform Denzel he was looking for him when he finds him.
Mr Richards asked everyone in his house to never talk about Denzel's abduction either in the house or not. He also told them not to tell anyone Denzel and Phyllis were in their house until their perpetrators have been arrested. Mr. Richards also told Phyllis to be off social media for a while and screen the calls that comes through her phone so that she could protect Denzel and herself. He went to Denzel and Phyllis' family house to inform them about what they had been through the past month. They all agreed to tell anyone who asked about Denzel and Phyllis that they had travelled to Paris for a vacation. They also agreed to communicate to them through Amelia instead of calling their phones directly. Mr. Richards left them with money and gave his complimentary card to them to call if ever they needed to talk to him or needed his help.
Denzel became responsive to treatment after a month and some few days though he had not fully recovered. He narrated his abduction to the Richards and Phyllis. He told them that, he had a call from Mr. Richards office line and the person who called him told him to come to the hospital because Mr. Richards had suffered a heart attack during a meeting and they don't want it to come to the public notice so the Accountant asked him to call him to the hospital since he was like a son to Mr. Richards and Amelia was out of the country. He was also told not to inform anyone about the call since they needed to prevent this news from circulating. Denzel said he left his friend's house as soon as he ended the call but on his way to the hospital, he was crossed by a car and he had to stop. He was forced out of his car when he stopped abruptly by three men in masks. They covered his face with a mask too as they pushed him inside their car. He told them he saw or heard nothing until the next morning because he was kept in isolation in a dark room.
He said, the men in masks came to him the next morning in the room he was kept. They brought him food and water and forced him to eat and drink and later started questioning him on why he was asking questions about Mr. Richards Accountant. They asked him to tell them what he knew about the man and show them where the information he had gathered had been kept. He was beaten while they were forcing answers out of him but he refused to answer them because he overheard one of them tell the others to kill him after they have found what they were looking for so he decided to buy a little time by not answering their questions because they would kill him when they get what they want from him.
The kidnappers when they couldn't get any relevant information out of him beat him to pulp and hanged him. He was about losing hope, when he heard their phone ring and they left him there and Mr. Richards' security men came to his rescue . Phyllis felt bad for deciding to investigate the Accountant because she felt that was the course of all their problems now. She began to cry but Amelia's mother warned her that would be bad for her baby so she had to control herself.
Mr. Richards called the police to his house and Denzel narrated all that happened to them so they went to Denzel's house with him and Mr. Richards to get both the hard and soft copies of his and Phyllis' investigation since he kept them after her accident. They went to find his house and safe broken into with his things scattered around but he went straight to his washroom to bring the evidence and it wasn't even tempered with because nobody would ever think of going to the toilet to look for anything of value.
The police drove them to Mr. Richards house and asked him to continue hosting and protecting Phyllis and Denzel until they were done with their investigations. They warned that, they keep their whereabouts secret from everyone so that they would be safe from anyone seeking their lives. The police called Mr. Richards Accountant for questioning but he was hesitant to go so they went with a court order to summon him to the police station for questioning. He requested to respond to their questions in the presence of his lawyer so they called his lawyer for him. The evidence the police had gathered coupled with Denzel's and Phyllis' own was too solid that they had to give his docket to the state prosecutor to prepare for his prosecution in the court of law. He was locked up in a cell and was refused bail since it a case of attempted murder on two counts.
