章節 47: DAUGHTER NOT DAUGHTER

After a long silence, Joe initiated a conversation.

"So you were actually not shooting in the dark when you mentioned about this theory of yours. A serial killer was indeed lurking the District 12."

Abby on the other hand, raised an eyebrow when she heard Joe.

"Of course I am not. Come on, you know me more than anyone else. I am not someone who would shoot in the dark, to begin with."

She said with a conceited smile pasted on her face. Joe wanted to refute her words but changed his mind at the last minute because he realized that the other party indeed had all the right to act like that.

Seeing the other party's roguish and playful side on a daily basis, Joe often forgot that the young lady she worked with actually had an impressive background. In fact, she had a resume that anyone in the industry would probably feel envious about.

She had her graduate degree overseas, which honed her to becoming a silver tongue. She was undeniably eloquent and not to say, a multi-lingual person as well. Despite her young age, she had already mastered different languages. That was why many believed that a job in journalism was truly a job fitted for her.

Other than that, Abby also had three years of work experience at the International Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders.

With such kind of credentials under her belt, Joe reckoned that it was only normal for the other party to be full of herself every now and then.

"Don't give me that look, little girl. I know you had been dying to cover this one for ages already. Go on, go get to work, but bring Gaston with you."

Joe instructed but the other party only rolled her eyes.

"No thanks."

She uttered and turned on her heels, ready to depart at any moment.

'What a hard-headed brat, indeed. Exactly just like his father. Oh dear God, please let his soul rest in peace.'

Joe thought to himself. Then he sported a serious expression afterward to make himself more convincing.

"You are not going anywhere without a company."

Joe said as he pulled Abby on her hoodie. Abby wanted to protest but before she could even say her words of protest, her boss already cut her off.

"But Joe----"

"No more buts, Abigail Salas. You either go and take Gaston with you or you better forget about working with this scoop. You make your choice."

Joe said with a voice a little strict than his normal speaking voice. Somehow, the other party resembled a father who was actually bargaining with his naughty daughter.

"Look, Joe. I am not in need of a cameraman just yet. Besides, if ever I need one, I also did not think that Gaston was the right fit for me. Have you forgotten already the last time he did the cover for me? Almost all of the footage was out of focus! For crying out sake!"

Abby reasoned out, but actually there was one more thing that she did not exactly like about this Gaston guy.

He was a heavy smoker!

Abby had bad asthma ever since she was a child, so it was only normal for her to hate cigarette smoke in general. Gaston, on the other hand, dedicated most of his time turning himself into a human exhaust pipe.

Whenever he had free time or spare change, the other party would always make a gleeful beeline for lung cancer.

Abby already made it obvious that she did not want to bring Gaston with her but despite how adamant she was, Joe still insisted.

"But Gaston is big. He can look after you."

It was not that Joe was deliberately making it hard for Abby, nor he was purposely trying to go against her will. It was just that, at some point, Joe was worried about Abby's safety and he believed that having Gaston beside her as she tried to do her job would at least keep her out of harm's way.

Abby was like a daughter to him; a daughter that he would probably never had as all he had in his records were several failed marriages.

It was for that same reason why he chose to dedicate her fatherly affection towards Abby instead. Abby's father was actually his late best friend. A great companion that he once had back in the days when carbon paper and typewriters were still a thing for the reporters.

Truth be told, Joe actually played a big role in bringing the child into this world as he was the one who introduced Abby's mother to her father.
