章節 3: 03. The dowry matter

Elder Kang coughed. ''We became nobles a few years ago. So our nobility entries are just fist and second cousins since we became nobles.''

Lord Ka sarcastically smiled and pointed ta the only one page where the family names were written on. ''So you signed only the family members from this family, not your Elders as well?''

Elder Kang paled a bit but shrugged it off. ''My family became nobles, not whole Kang name.''

''I see...'' He looked through the list and one name caught his eyes. ''Lady Bai Zhenzhen? From the Bai family in the capital?''

Elder Kang was about to sit down when he jumped again as if something bit him. ''Do not even speak about those unfortunate people to me. Bai family always looked down on me. They married their daughter to my son after he was one of the best scholars in the country. I thought she was a lady but to aghast, she was no more than a shrew.''

Lord Ka's eyebrows furrowed as he heard his words and he looked coldly at Elder Kang that had no idea what was brewing for him. He turned to the young man on the side and stared at him. No wonder. Such good looking young man that had the future had caught the eye of Lady Bai. Then he looked at the small child that sat on the ground hopelessly.

He smiled coldly and nodded. ''The moment I erase her name from this family book you and your Kang family won't have anything to do with her. What about her mother? Is she at least buried in your family tomb?''

The old man started almost jumping like imp hearing his words. ''That wrench! We divorced her and hse hung herself. Shu Ya is protecting her ashes all the time or I would have just thrown it in water to go far away from us. That unlucky person!''

Shu Ya just now got many pieces of information about this child and felt deeply aggrieved for her. This is even worse than her own life, or was it the same? She rose her sleeve and saw many blue bruises. Yep, same.

But how old is this child? She looked at the hands of her father and then at her own and she assumed she was about 9-10. Not a completely small child. But not a grown-up.

While she dazedly looked at the bruises on her arms, Lord ko narrowed his eyes. ''Good. then so be it. I will do that this way. You divorced her mother and want both fo them to be erased from the family book?''

Elder Kang stocked for a moment but then made a decision. ''Yes. I want to do that.''

Lord Ko looked at him and nodded. ''then so be it. You have to make signatures to official documents about that as well so we can erase her from your name completely.''

''I accept.'' Elder Ko came closer and signed all the documents. But her husband had to sign as well so he came closer and when the last stamp was done Lord Ko started reading.

''From today on family Kang gave up all right on miss Bai Shu Ya. As she was sighed out from the paternal registry she will hold her maternal name, Bai. By the law of our country, by divorce and separation of the family, the given dowry must be returned. Where is the dowry list that was signed in the registry that year and the contract?'' Lord Ka took the contract and list of dowry and waved in front of pale looking, Elder Kang.

''This, how is this possible?'' He paid good money to the official before to destroy these papers.

''Oh, you mean how do I have these papers and why haven't they been destroyed. He took your money and wanted to blackmail you for years to come. Anyway. Looking at this list you and your family own her quite an amount. I assume you gave the amount to your wife and wrote a new contract or provided it for her daughter?'' Lord Ka rose his eyebrows as he waved with the paper.

Elder Kang was standing bit further away so he couldn't get close and the young Kang was a scholar so all he could do is shake in anger. ''She destroyed my reputation, killed my child and now you even want to give her a present. Not giving!''

Lord Ka just chuckled. ''Not giving is not an answer. By the power given me by the Emperor himself, I can just send soldiers and find all the items she brought here and if I don't find them I will sell everything I can from your house in the worth of those items. Let's start!''

''Ten black pearls from East Sea. Twenty sets in heavy gold and fifty sets of jewelry in jade. Five tea sets from different kinds of jade gifted by Empress Dowager herself. Seventeen rolls of rare scriptures. Fifty rolls of rare silk gifted by the palace...'' Most of her dowry were gifts by the Empresses, Princesses and noblewomen in the city. Bai Zhenzhen was loved by many as she had a soft heart and a helping nature. On top of that, she was a healer herself.

''...rare herbs, tinctures gifted by the Emperor. I have been given notice that she was never extremely sick so all these should be still in her possession. Servant read more.'' Lord Ka sat down as servant unrolled the list and started reading turning Elder Kang's face ashen.

''Soldiers! Go inside and find the items, now!'' When the list was done he saw the two men sitting on the floor in desperation and not moving.

''Stop, you can't!'' but no matter how much the two men tried to stop them they were bound and left on the floor while soldiers rushed inside and ransacked the whole place.

Villagers got scared when they saw the soldiers so they left the courtyard quickly, but their curiosity couldn't be stopped, so they peeked from outside to see what was going on.

Screams and cries could be heard. Shu Ya stood up with shaky legs and wanted to go in, but he stopped her. ''You can't go in anymore. Sorry.''
