The young wolf moves to try and keep his back against a tree, well at least his tail end. This was probably the only time that was going to be a hard thing to guard. An ice needle flying out towards one of the rats. The action causes it to screech, making a loud scream that hurts his ears. The other rats taking up the action, noticing the effect it has.
While it did distract him, it also kept them from moving. The loud noise caused them to need to grab all of the sounds from deep in their little chests. The first rat having a light dribble of red in the fading light. The want to cover his ears are outweighed by the fact that if he did, it would make it hard for him to see what they would be doing.
He keeps his eyes on the shifting shadows that were the rats that appeared from under trees. It almost felt like he had wandered into a den with the amount. The size probably being the only reason that they were not as numerous. He counts out all he could see, finding about 7 that he could reasonably make out. The fact they moved themselves quick enough, he couldn't tell whether he had double counted or missed one.
His next attempt to thin them, while they were still screeching, he managed to launch a needle down the throat. Blood frothed from the mouth, shutting it up, and causing it to thrush in panic and smacking against the others near. The hole that opened quickly closed, their dying comrade forgotten about soon after.
A couple of the rats decided to change tactics, jumping around and over the other, trying to smash into his sides in blind spots. He whirled to face the one on his left, not able to pay attention to both sides, decisiveness was needed, and he wouldn't be able to pull back from it. The pain of teeth pulling on his tail causes him to wince, but the sight of a needle piercing the rodent's eye, actually breaking out the back of the beasts head.
There was a couple of others that took their chance to try and ground him. The bum rush from the pair was a near miss as he turns hard, The pain on his tail grew worse, he could feel a little extra weight for a few moments. It wasn't enough force to make the body to smash into the others like he had hoped. But he did come face to face with the rat that had a piece of his tail in it's mouth. He smashed another needle right the rat, vaguely noting that it was the one that he had previously injured..
He could feel a bit of heat from the injuries, but adrenaline kept him focusing as the energy seemed to soon be drained. He had a few more chances to use the needles, but if his count was right, there was still four, and he could only do two. Luckily, he still had another option, moving to rush a rat that had wound up by itself. A scared squeak coming from it, turning around, trying to escape, before the powerful jaws closing around the spine.
There is a loud crunch of bone breaking, the rat's death almost immediate with the sharp pressure. A memory about how powerful a dog's jaws were coming up, but quickly pressed back down. From his now exposed right side, he felt scratching of a few clawed hands. This time, when he faced them, the rats pulled back, other's trying to approach from the sides this time, keeping him on his toes instead. The blood flowing down his legs, breathing heavy as he watches the ones he can,
Now that some were dead, he could see there was only 3 more. His count had fortunately been right. But they seemed slightly cowed, wanting to kill him, but also not wanting to risk themselves, seeing their friends had already died. They seemed to silently communicate, pulling away slow and steady, disappearing as the light had fully faded. The wolf collapsing in exhaustion after realizing the fight was finally finished.
He could feel his mother approaching, the worry was palpable. It was the first time he had been close to his death in this new life. He is quick to send the bodies to ash. He hadn't really noticed this, but the one he had first got a needle to shove into it's throat was still slowly slipping from the mortal coil.
He couldn't be bothered by the rat's energy slipping into his chest. Taking a moment and letting out a sight as he tries to stand. His eyes close, trying to sense whether his he was still bleeding, he could tell that they would soon start to be closing up. It wouldn't take to much effort to move, but his side was still causing problems.
The fact that he was moving now towards her, made her relax a little. Still worried for her son, but knowing that he was going to be safe. Each step sent a little stab of pain, letting out a little whimper, not holding back because of the pain. Syren soon appearing through the trees, looking on with worry at her little cub. She wouldn't be able to lift him, but she could help keep him safe.
