章節 35: Chapter 35

The mound of fur was still rising and falling regularly, deep in and out breathes, light rumbles from the chest making it obvious that it hasn't stirred. The pressure from the large creature seeming to get heavier the closer the young wolf gets. It wasn't a physical sensation, something that seemed to be reaching out of it's body, like a pheromone.

When it shifted, he had a chance to get a look at it's face without approaching it. The eyes seemed to be open, causing the little cub to freeze, thinking that the creature was just playing with him. He might be a distance away, but he was under no impression that he could escape the huge creature. After a minute of standing completely still, eyes forward, almost to afraid to blink.

It was a guess after a second, the eyelids were just hiding the fact they had closed eyes. Anything without a modicum of intelligence, or the senses, could miss the fact that the creature wasn't aware enough to hunt anything that comes close enough. The wolf takes his time now, still looking at the creature, it looked like a bear was bred with a giant. He never really saw a bear up this close, even if he was a hundred lengths, it was still 4-6 times his height. The muscles seem to twitch with every bit, like it was ready to wake up without any problems.

The wolf starts to try to move slowly backwards, keeping his eyes peeled onto the large creature, he missed something that had been closer then he had remembered, a stick that easily broke under his foot. The loud crack seeming to echo for miles, even if he knew that it wasn't possible. It could have even be his stronger senses. An almost physical pressure seems to suddenly radiate out, making his legs feel week, hoping to find a chance to run.

The bear like creatures head raises, not really looking, just looking around blearily, obviously annoyed waking up, but was more just a quick stirring, not even making it move more then raising it's head. For a few moments, the pressure was constantly pressing down while the head was up. The birdsongs had quieted, as if they were afraid of causing any sort of outbursts.

There was a slightly interesting occurrence, a paw moves over it's face, almost like covering to hid from the light. And, on the same side, another paw moves over it's ears, like it was keeping it from hearing anything. In the wolf's mind, it imagines the strange creature had 4 sets of limbs. the large creature probably had the first pair for the front, and if he guessed right, the second pair would keep it aloft, depending on what it has planned.

Once the pressure abated, the wolf turns and almost runs, but is able to keep himself from going to quick and noisily. He mentally marks the location as a place to avoid. The fact that the birds were so muted near the creature would make it easier to avoid. He wasn't going to have a chance at risking being smashed under the bulk of the huge creature.

It was a few minutes after that the bird calls came back, soon in the full swing, not the muted calls, letting him know there shouldn't be something as dangerous as that octo-bear, not a unique name, but something that would definitely describe it if the name was right. He was a moment away from trying to go back astrally, but he wasn't anywhere near a safe place up on this level of the mountain.

There was a few more animals that were starting to get active, the sun hadn't dimmed, but he was sure that it would soon be dark enough to hide all their movements. It seems like it was reaching the twilight of the day.

In the distance, he can hear the calls of other animals, signaling their hunts for the night, bringing in their families and packs. This making him realize, now was the time to return. The fact there was some rustling nearby, made him move quicker, caring less for stealth, now that he wasn't worried about the bear.

He noticed a few shadows, nothing larger then himself, but he knew with the calls reaching out form the nearby forest, it wouldn't make sense that it wasn't a pack hunter. Thought it could bee something else, but the appearance made him pick up the pace, starting to move faster and faster.

It took a moment, finding the shadows had started to move themself around him, when he had been running earlier, he couldn't tell what they were. Now, with them trying to encircle, he takes a good look at them. It was something like a giant rat.

It had a tapered snout, long whiskers that twitched with every breathe, and he could see, short sharp teeth. The eyes had a slitted pupil, reminiscent of a cat's eye, but it was white with a small black center, surrounded by black. It's appearance was scary, the strangeness of the eyes making him think how could it see.

It's ears were a bit larger like triangles, swiveling a little, making sure to cause the wolf a bit of worry. The fact that he was outrun by these slightly smaller creatures. He starts to prepare, knowing that he was going to have to be ready to fight his way out. The fact that the rat's had the advantage had him on edge. They knew more about this area, they had possibly been leading him to their most advantageous spot.

His preparations were quick, a few needles of ice form over his shoulder, ready to be pushed out as fast as light. The wolf stands tall, a little growl, knowing his mom, along with the vixens, were to far away. The first thought being to drag this out as long as possible.
