Si Xia blushed and hung his head while Yu Chen laughed shamelessly and continued to stuff her face.
Si Xia looked at Chen sitting beside him from the corner of his eyes as warmth spread across his heart. He loved how real Chen was in front of her parents. It was like she had nothing to hide and was still a little kid who enjoyed everything with all her heart.
Yu Chen was the elder kid and came from a not very well off family, so Si Xia could easily understand how she would always have felt that she needed to grow up quickly and start shouldering responsibility. It was kind of like what happened to him. Growing up in an orphanage with nothing more than a meager monthly allowance his parents had left for him.
But still Xia had always understood that was more than what most around him had. So he had decided very early on that he needed to grow up and stand on his feet as soon as possible.
Xia's smile turned a little melancholy as he looked at Chen. He would be lying if he said that he wasn't a little bit envious of Chen right now. She had a place to return to, a place where she could feel safe.
Just as Si Xia was thinking these, Yu Chen reached over and squeezed his hand under the table.
All the negative thoughts vanished from Xia's mind as he realised what Chen was trying to tell him. That he had a safe harbour too. He had a place to return to too. Years ago, Chen had promised that she was going to be his family, and Si Xia knew that she was going to follow through.
"Mom. Give some meat to Xia too. Look how thin he is." Yu Chen laughed as she decided to throw Si Xia under the bus.
Xia was confused as to what happened as Mrs. Yu suddenly began to pile food in his bowl and scold him. "Yes. Look at how thin you are. I'm sure both you and Chen don't even have proper meals, trying to be 'health conscious'." Mrs. Yu spoke as she piled dish after dish in Xia's bowl.
Si Xia was still shocked as Yu Chen chimed in, "Yeah mom. Though I do eat everything I get, but Xia is very particular. He's too health conscious. Can you imagine? He once said no to ice-cream!!??!!?!?"
Si Xia raised an eyebrow at Chen, who looked at him with fake horror on her face. Chen's expression was so fake that Xia wondered how Mrs. Yu couldn't see it.
"Oh! You don't know how nice it is to have young people over. It's always been just the two of us for the past few years during the new year's." Mrs. Yu spoke, sitting down with a satisfied expression once Si Xia's bowl resembled a mountain of food.
"Why? For how long hasn't Mian come back?" Yu Chen asked as Si Xia looked at his bowl like he was getting ready to fight a battle.
"Oh it's been years. She's changed ever since she went to the city. And your mother used to complain that you didn't come to meet us." Mr. Yu spoke in a gruff voice.
