The two Ducal guards were a few seconds ahead of the two hordes, but no other soldiers accompanied them. Either they had all already been swallowed up by the Digestors or they had dispersed a little earlier to increase their chances of survival.
Either way, the bastard Ducal guards had continued to follow them, bringing with them an army of Digestors who appeared to relish them.
Despite the pain and inability to get up feeding his despair, Jake did not admit defeat. The Myrmidian mentality was the most valuable thing he had acquired during his First Ordeal. He was in no condition to run, so all he could do was fight.
In front of the dazed eyes of the two princesses, Jake put down his backpack and pulled out two Blue Cubes the size of a Rubik's Cube. Placing his hand against the two Cubes, he received a notification asking him if he wanted to retrieve the contents inside and he accepted without further ado.
I digress from yesterday's chapter because I didn't expect so much backlash.
Of course, you are free to have your opinion, but please don't shout inconsistency or discontent as soon as Jake suffers a setback. This story, I spend hours every day for peanuts to be absolutely certain that there are no plot holes or incoherencies. There's a detailed outline and each character has a character to conform to.
I know most webnovels are self-fulfillment stories, but in my opinion the best stories are the ones where the hero is struggling to achieve his goals, because then you can really feel that he's come out of his ordeal all grown up.
Just because you didn't see something coming or didn't like something, doesn't mean it's inconsistent or not planned. I've received very conflicting comments in the previous three chapters: "Everybody's dumb except Jake." and "Jake is dumb for getting screwed over by Yerode and Lamine."
It shows the contradiction in the readers. You want a perfect, powerful hero, but at the same time you don't want anything to happen to him, you want everybody to be brilliant, but not too much... Anyway, you get the point, as an author I have to make choices.
Of course, I'm only human. I can make mistakes and I certainly will make mistakes, so please feel free to comment when you think you see a problem. But most of the time, if one or more explanations come to mind, then surely one of them is the right one.
I could write an essay at each chapter to explain the why of the how, but at some point you have to accept the events.
Other than that, I am active on Discord. For those who really want to discuss the chapters in more detail, I am usually present and answer the more pointed questions that some readers have.
