The amount of hustle and bustle of the port town of Riche is comparable to even the giant metropolis of Tokyo. The countless of visitors along with merchants coming in and out impressed even the Evelyn who came from a modern world. Though it was known as a town, the sheer size of the capital of Serda comes closer to a city. A large number of goods in many modes of transportation were being moved with those said merchants. A sizeable gate was made in order to accommodate the number of goods and people coming through. Their wagon gradually made their way in along with the others. There were guards posted here and there but their objectives were not actually to check each and every visitor coming through the gate. Under the watchful eyes, both Roland and Evelyn enters Riche.
What greets them is the wide open street along with grey stone buildings lining up at the sides of the street. Compared to all the small villages that Evelyn had seen, the amount of wealth could be seen from just the materials from the buildings alone. The overlapping sounds of hooves trotting onto the cobblestone street could be heard almost anywhere.
"We'll go find an inn to stay at and afterward we can tour around the city."
Evelyn nodded and they continued. Roland, who asked around for an inn, drove their wagon to a particular inn in the city. Finally arriving at the inn, The Leviathan, they asked for the stable space for their steed and wagon. Walking into the inn, the two could see numerous sea serpent trophies on the wall. Skulls were primarily the most present and sometimes part of some taxidermy sea serpents coiled itself onto the wooden support pillars of the inn. Looking around the inn is fairly busy with the inn itself close to being half full. They walk up to the counter where a dainty young lady with pigtails works. She displays a businesslike smile.
"Welcome to The Leviathan, how can I help you?"
"I would like to reserve two rooms please."
"Certainly," The young lady replies. "and for how long are you going to be staying with us?"
"When does the next ship that crosses the Adnes Ocean arrive?"
"If we are going according to schedule, they will arrive in about a week."
"Then let us go with that." Roland said. "We will stay for a week."
"A night's stay for two rooms is 20 copper coins per night," The young lady adds. "it will be 1 silver and 20 copper coins."
Roland takes out his coin pouch, the coins clinking against one another. Loosening the string, he fumbles inside to grab and take out the coins. Leaving them onto the counter, the young lady quickly sums up the amount and then nods her head.
"Your rooms are up on the second floor." She said. "Take a left at the first turn and the two rooms at the end across from each other are yours."
Reaching below, she takes out two copper keys and hands it off to Roland. Taking the keys, Roland then hands one to Evelyn. Evelyn takes a look at the copper key and could see a number 3 carved into the flat head of the key. Taking their luggage, Roland makes his way up the stairs with Evelyn following a step behind him.
.....
After settling into their respective rooms, the two then met up downstairs at their own table. Roland solemnly looks at Evelyn who stares inquisitively to the everyday hustle outside of the inn's windows. The window's glass had some impurities so the final outcome led to the glass having a foggy stain in the glass itself.
"Evelyn, there's something I have to say."
Hearing Roland, she turns and faces him. Evelyn has a feeling of what Roland is going to say. In the first place, she was a stranger to Roland when they first met so it was not odd that it would lead up to this point. However, this final outcome is fine with Evelyn. It has been a long dream, but she had to wake up sooner or later. She had enjoyed the sights and adventure with Roland. Evelyn silently sat in her seat, her gaze still onto Roland.
"From this point on, I believe it to be best if I go on alone."
"Though I enjoyed the company on the way here," Roland continues. "but from here on out, I cannot guarantee your safety."
"I have a close friend in this city, so I will go talk to her and see if I can set up something before I leave."
Evelyn simply shook her head and responds back to Roland.
"Sir Roland, that is kind of you but you do not need to," Evelyn said. "to be honest I had expected things would come to this."
"So Sir Roland, though it is kind of you, I do not have a need for you to do that."
"Then, what are you going to do?"
"Things will pan out, I am sure." Evelyn gives a reassuring smile. "You do not need to worry."
Roland gives a wry smile. Rummaging through his small rucksack, he gives her a brilliant ice blue rune gemstone. Evelyn, recognizing the gemstone, tilts her head in slight confusion. Roland continues holding out his hands above the table, waiting for Evelyn. Finally, Evelyn reaches out her hand to receive Roland's gift. Roland takes her hand, places onto her palm and then cups her hand with his. His eyes, a gentle ambiance, seems to be tearing up.
"I am sorry, but I cannot help but be reminded of the young lady."
"In the past, due to my weakness, I was unable to fulfill my duty of protecting her."
"I watched her grow up from infancy, treated her as if she was my own daughter."
"But I failed her, and also the lord that I served when she passed," Roland said. "and as I grew old I remembered the promise I made to her; I retired and decided to roam to every inch of this world."
"I do not wish for something similar to happen again."
"I am sorry."
Once again, feeling the warmth of Rolands clasped hands, Evelyn gently shook her head. She could feel the genuine care that Roland contained. Clasping onto the ice blue gemstone tighter, she begins to reassure him once again.
After the discussion, they begin to wander around the port city. They went to every place possible and greatly enjoyed their time. As a place with many different countries visits and trades, there were many exotic goods and foods readily available throughout the whole city. Not only that but Evelyn also saw many different races. Elves, dwarves, lizardmen, halflings, and beastmen were the more noticeable races that Evelyn could identify. It was interesting to converse and exchange cultures with all of them. The many types of food also brought Evelyn much joy. Some were delicious, some were okay and even some of them were so horrid that Evelyn could not bear to swallow it. Then it came the day in which they had to part.
.....
"I'll be going now."
"Mm, good luck out there Roland."
Both Evelyn and Roland were having a stiff farewell. In both of their situation, they did not know what to say to the other. Though awkward, they could not help but laugh. A burst of rough but hearty laughter erupted from Roland and a soft and charming laugh from Evelyn. A smile on both faces.
"Farewell Evelyn."
"Goodbye, Roland."
With each a final goodbye, Roland boards onto the ship. Seeing the masts unfurling, the ship finally speeds off towards an unfamiliar land. In her clenched hands, the gemstone was given to her by Roland. A gift that was once originally for Stella but now a parting gift for Evelyn. Standing by the docks with the ship turning into a small speck in the horizon, her vision starts to darken. She knows that it is time for her to wake up from her dream.
