parties are nice
but i am one who doesn't like a lot of noise
and i am shy by nature,.... haha
we used to have birthday parties at my house
mum would call all our friends from our buddhist religion group, her work colleagues and other friends... and they would bring their children to come play with me....
she would cook a lot of food for everyone and sometimes we had a potluck where everyone who came to visit would make something for the party!
i did love my birthday parties a lot....
my first big birthday party was when i was 6 years old,.... mum and grandma (popo) were cooking in our new house kitchen and mum said that i will have a grand party with lots of food to eat,... i was excited and so happy,.... i put on a beautiful long red and lacy dress that i found in the closet. mum said it belonged to my cousin who has since outgrew it.... she said that i could wear it for my birthday.... my dad was the photographer and held his camera to his chest with the strap around his neck.... he is always the photkgrapher of our family and quite seldom in the photographs that he takes,.....those days, the camera was an old one using film and you couldn't choose which photo you wanted to develop.... the roll of film would be taken out of the camera to be developped in a dark room with special liquid and hung dry.... most of the time, there were "candid photos", photos that were out of focus or badly lit....
we had to wait a long time for the party to begin.... we made so much food; red-shelled eggs, a cake from the local bakery, fried bihun noodles and fried chicken. i'm sure there were more but i can't remember them. anyway, who attended in the end was just my sister and my first and only childhood friend,.... we waited around the living room, taking photos on the sofa chairs.... at last, when the food was ready, we arranged the living room table with a table cloth and all the food mentioned above.
i'm not sure if we had paper plates and cups though but we had them for other parties after that....
everyone sang me "happy birthday"... it's so strange though cos we never had a birthday party as grand as that.... not for my previous birthdays nor for my parents or for popo....
it is one of my happy memories, one i have kept till now....
