章節 19: Mission #1 - 1

ON THE SURFACE

"Are you sure you didn't see wrong?" Noah asked as he observed his friend, trying his best to sport a poker face. But, the mere glances and whispers that were carried around them showed everyone's thoughts about this situation.

"You don't believe me?" He saw his friend swallow thickly. "I swear man. She was right here! Right here!" He pointed at the spot where he stood on. "She was gasping for air and her legs- no. Her fins transformed to legs slowly and she stumbled, then-"

A sigh interrupted his speech. "Yeah, we heard you." One of his friends stood behind the erratic man, and shook her head at Noah, signaling to him to cut this whole thing short.

He blinked once at her before saying, "why don't we check around first and see if she walked away?"

That had appeased his friend, and he saw him nodding slowly, walking toward another spot with his disheveled hair and small murmurs.

A trip to the hospital would do.

The salted breeze was tickling her exposed shoulders and neck, and she found relief in the small cloth that had covered her from the chest down to her upper thighs. Her hair was nearly freed out of kelps and other small garbage that somehow tingled themselves in there. Her rosy lips softly trembled as she breathed deeply.

Lia almost let out a frustrated groan as she failed once again to free her hair and she dropped her hands to her sides as she felt them grow heavier.

She wasn't accustomed to such a feeling.

No, there was a list of things that she wasn't used to; she wasn't used to the feeling of sticky salted water sticking her hair to her skin and the sand traveling to weird parts of her body; she wasn't used to how light her body felt on land, almost as though if she decided to jump, she would suddenly fly with the wind. And she wasn't used to how her soft skin felt when she crossed her legs or arms.

And most importantly, she wasn't used to the feeling of nakedness. The awareness of the wind piercing through her skin and making her shudder as drops of water continued to trail down her body. On top of that, It was weird to see the new parts of her body that were added as she transformed.

Her arrival wasn't as extravagant as she had wished it would be. The moment her 'feet' touched the ground, she had stumbled forward and was greeted warmly with the sand on her face.

No, the sand wasn't the only thing that welcomed her. It was also the sound of a scream. So loud it almost made her sensitive ears bleed. With that, she discovered that her first appearance was caught by someone's eyes.

She was both horrified and embarrassed.

That human ran so fast, she couldn't even see his shadow.

"Doze off like that and we won't be able to get out of here before sunrise." A voice shook her out of her state. The voice reminded her that she wasn't alone - something she wasn't sure if she should be delighted at or hateful toward.

"I wasn't told that I would be escorted by somebody." She threw a glare over her shoulder. She knew that if it was her any other time, she would have acted differently. But with how everything was happening, she didn't really feel like herself.

She could feel his gaze on her skin, just as present as the wind. His eyes looked straight at her blue ones, so intensely that she was sure he could see her fear and worries.

And then he smiled. A small dimple showed itself onto his left cheek, and his red eyes — now more brown than red — were sparkling like the stars. "As if they told you anything."

He looked completely different from when he was underwater. When she had seen him the first time, she arrived, she was still getting used to her legs and lungs and it took her awhile to recognize him without his tail.

He had stood there proudly, rocking his human clothes confidently while waiting for her on the other side.

His eyes had a light to them, so different from the anxious look she had seen back then. Yet, somehow his voice remained as playful as she remembered from their past, almost too playful.

Lia didn't know if she liked that.

"What does that mean?" She asked.

He chuckled again at her, looking at her silly state. "It means that there are a lot of things you need to be conscious of. Let's start with you covering yourself." He nodded at her body.

She looked down to see that the 'towel' — or whatever he had called it — fell to her legs, exposing her breasts.

She just blinked at them, totally unaffected. She heard a sigh. "I'm sure you read about it. But humans are sensitive to nudity, so you need to consistently cover yourself. Don't show too much skin or you would be called horrendous things and attract unnecessary attention."

She looked at him warily. "What horrendous things? You seem to speak of experience." Her words had caused him to look elsewhere swiftly. When he gazed away, the light shifted in them, and they were darker in color. His high cheekbones slowly reddened for some reason.

"What happened?" She found herself standing from her place, towel long discarded and all the kelp and whatnot was out of her hair.

Her pressing look made him cough awkwardly. He only straightened his posture and flung a brief glance at her body. "Cover yourself up! You need to learn fast how to adapt." Then he gazed at her eyes. All jokes were thrown aside. "I have missions of my own. Just like you."

She frowned. Pulling back. "You will be leaving?"

Lia saw Cas's expression soften, "I have to do my own things. Knowing you, you will adapt fast. But you need to remember to always stay low-key and never show your true form." He walked away from her, reaching down to grab the towel and hand it to her. "And remember all the instructions they informed you of before you left."

Inside her, grim scenarios started to surface up. She had been thrilled to feel her legs sink deep down into the sand, to feel her lungs fill up with air, and to run around and experience stuff her father had told her. But now that she was here, she realized she didn't know where to start.

Lia inhaled. She was no longer just Ster's daughter.

She hummed slowly and took the towel from him, wrapping it around herself. "You don't need to worry about me."

Cas pushed his hair back. The small curls made him appear younger under the stars.

She saw him nodding, "I will bring you clothes, and from there you will be alone."
