There's a reason that fingerprints are still one of the best ways to catch criminals. Criminals get sloppy and forget basic and obvious things. They might wear gloves, but still leave something behind.

For example a flashlight. Although the thief might be smart enough to destroy any fingerprints on the surface and always wear gloves, they'll almost certainly forget about the batteries or some other minor detail.
