"I'm sorry to keep you waiting but the tournament will now commence!"
The announcer spoke with confidence and enthusiasm using sound magic to amplify his voice throughout the stadium. There were cheers from all directions and load clapping that made my ears ring. The days flew by and today was the day of the tournament. The tournament bracket I was in, Bracket Two, had a few people I knew. There were too many students to put into one bracket so the school officials split us all into five brackets. In each there were around one hundred students aiming to either be scouted or win. There were many arenas that filled the room and each was assigned to a pair of students for the first round.
Melody sat next to me with an excited energy about her. It wasn't just Melody in my bracket though, there was also Jack, Cynthia and Warren, the total mystery. No one has any idea what his magical abilities are which makes him a dangerous opponent to face. I don't know when it happened but everyone sat around me like I was a social shield for them. All except for Warren that is. Even Cynthia looked nervous which was surprising since she usually gives off an 'I'm above you' aura.
At this rate no one will do well, "I know everyone is feeling a bit anxious but don't let that stop you. We came this far so lets do what Mr. Willows said and fight even if the outcome is unknown."
Melody became less tense, "Thanks, Nova."
Jack blushed and turned away while Cynthia crossed her arms and let a 'humph' escape her mouth. I really didn't know what I was expecting. The announcer spoke once again, "Let's start this off right with round one! Everyone take your spots at your assigned rings!"
I looked at everyone one last time, "Don't let yourselves get beaten by anyone except me alright?"
Cynthia seemed offended, "Like I'd let you beat me!"
I turned my back with my hand held above my shoulder and left for my arena. I looked at my ticket and headed for arena number twenty seven. when I arrived I was greeted by the referee. He explained the rules to me but they were quite simple. If you step out of the arena or are knocked out by your opponent you will be disqualified.
I got into the ring and greeted the opponent, "I'm Nova. Let's do our best okay?"
"Don't overstep your place, peasant. Just because you got to enroll here doesn't mean you have the right to speak to me as an equal."
"Oh? Is that right? How about we fight to determine that instead?"
"Why you insolent-!"
The referee interrupted before things got out of hand, "Get to your corners so I can start."
My opponent reluctantly went to his side and I went to mine. The referee counted us in, "Ready? Fight!"
I stood leisurely in my place waiting for him to make the first move.
"Where did all that confidence go? Take this!"
He sent a fire ball in my direction but it wizzed past my head, "Is that the best you can do?"
I disappeared from view and he looked shocked, "Where did she-!"
Before he could finish I appeared behind him and whispered in his ear, "You're all talk."
I shot a controlled and compacted wind current into his back which sent him flying out of the ring.
"Winner by ring knockout, Nova Orchid!"
The referee walked over to me, "That was quite impressive, let me recover your magical energy."
The referee placed his hand on my shoulder and i could feel the magical energy I used up refill itself.
"The next round will begin when your next opponent is finished with their fight. Until then you can sit in the chair outside of the ring. There's water if you need as well."
"Thanks but I think you should heal the guy I sent flying."
"Oh him? He'll be taken care of by the others."
Just as I looked over to where he landed, two men loaded him onto a stretcher and left. Maybe I went a little too far? Nah, he had it coming.
As I waited in my chair I calculated the amount of rounds left. Since there were around one hundred students to start, in round two there should be about fifty, round three about twenty five, which means someone will get to bypass to round four where there will be twelve, the quarterfinals will have six and then the semifinals will have three. Since there are three in the semifinals, one of the three will bypass to the finals.
My new opponent appeared and entered the ring. I got up and entered as well. After what happened last round I decided not to greet my opponents anymore.
"Ready? Fight!"
I stood leisurely like last time and waited for his move. Except I felt his Ki in two different places, in front and behind me.
"You're pretty good to cloak yourself using air magic but that won't work on me. Flash Current!"
I knelt and placed my palm on the floor, sending an intense electrical current throughout the whole platform. I heard a scream and a thud from behind me. The person in front of me turned out to be an earth substitute and crumbled to the floor lifelessly. I turned around to see the caster's real body lying on the floor knocked out.
"Winner by knockout, Nova Orchid!"
If he were facing anyone else he probably would have won. I'm sure he'll be scouted for his abilities though. A substitute and cloaking are two moderately advanced spells.
Next was round three. This time I was facing a girl. She was blond and was wearing a very showy outfit. Most of her body was exposed but i'm not a pervert or anything so I should be fine. Just then my nose started to trickle blood.
'Stop it me! I have Melody!'
I slapped my cheeks hard and got into a battle position.
"Ready? Fight!"
I stared at her awkwardly, "I'm sorry about this."
I made a gun shape with my pointer finger and thumb, "Water Pistol."
A water droplet appeared on my fingertip and shot in the direction of my opponent with the speed of a bullet. Before she could counter, the droplet hit her in the forehead and she dropped to the floor.
"Winner by knockout, Nova Orchid!"
Now there are only twelve students left. That means more people will be looking at our abilities so next time let's show off a little.
As soon as my opponent arrived I changed my mind. It was Cynthia. During the race exam she never used her magic once. Either she hid her abilities or she didn't want to use them for some reason. The first is the most likely.
I walked over to Cynthia and stuck out my hand, "No holding back alright?"
She smirked and shook it, "You don't have to tell me twice."
we went to our respective places and readied ourselves for combat.
The announcer counted us in, "Ready... Fight!"
Just to clarify, spirit energy and magical energy are the same thing.
