The letter that his father left him made him break down in tears, he was a grown man but his emotional attachment towards his father was extremely great. Anyone who loved their parents would mourn them the moment they knew that they were dead.
The shock of Joseph was greater than most since just yesterday they were chatting and doing their daily routines. The next day, his father was dead sitting motionlessly on the chair.
After calming down, Joseph with a heavy heart took his father's corpse then buried him in the middle of the night. His father didn't have much of a relationship with others since he liked being alone, the only person who was close to him was his own son.
After saying his prayer and thanks, Joseph laid down on the bed where he felt more exhausted than when he was training. This kind of exhaustion was not physical rather it was emotional. All these years, he had been strengthening his physical prowess but not his mental one.
That night a sad, sorrowful cry echoed in the forest as Joseph cried himself to sleep.
In the morning, Joseph opened his bloodshot eyes as he tried to greet the morning but the emotional scar he experienced the night before made him want to vomit as this morning did not greet him with warmness like usual but a melancholy atmosphere.
This memory will forever remain in his mind for years to come. Trying to recall all those times when his warm father greeted him and showed him how to protect himself made Joseph unstable, "Why... Why didn't you tell me, father? I could have had at least tried to find a way to save you..."
Remembering all those times, he sat on the chair where his father died that night. He looked out the window where he buried his father in the cover of darkness. A wisp-like figure appeared on top of the grave out of nowhere, Joseph went outside to inspect the situation and to act accordingly, like the way his father taught him.
Step by step, he closed in the figure and as he took each step the mysterious figure kept on getting more and more defined until it was clear what its face looked like.
Joseph got ready for battle just in case because as his father had taught him that to be cautious of everything because a single mistake could cost you your life.
When the wisp-like figure got more defined it then looked like a ghostly man that was see through but appeared to be able to interact with the physical plane. "F-Father? I-Is that you? That's impossible! Unless you turned into a..." A voice interrupted him.
The ghostly man in front of him was indeed his father but there was something different about him, "Hmph! After 100 years, you only got this strong? What a disappointment! That's why you have only learned a tiny fraction of Wisp Swordsmanship. I only came back to teach my Wisp Swordsmanship to someone who can manage it."
The difference was obvious, his father was no longer a human but a spirit. Spirits linger after the being dies, only due to unknown circumstances will they come back as spirits. When one becomes a spirit it is no longer considered as that particular being but an entity that has a purpose and will do anything to fulfill that purpose.
Joseph's father, Ken, came back just so that he could teach his Wisp Swordsmanship to someone worthy. Seeing the figure of his dead father, he was feeling mixed emotions. On one hand, he was extremely happy as he could still talk to him and say things that he didn't get the chance to say before. But on the other, his father wasn't the same man when he was alive, he was now cold and only had the goal of teaching his Wisp Swordsmanship. The once warm, loving father was now a cold and emotionless man, made Joseph feel uneasy as he tried to make the best of the situation.
"Father, I know that you aren't the real you but I will still try to fulfill your goal."
"Hmph! Then if you manage to survive three strikes from me, I will let you learn Wisp Swordsmanship."
Joseph readied himself for the upcoming strike but realized that this single strike could kill him ten times over. Fearing for his life he immediately gave up, "I may not be able to learn Wisp Swordsmanship but I may be able to find someone who can."
"Tsk! Then find that person! Otherwise don't come back here! This is an order." After this, Joseph wasn't sad at all, on the contrary, he was relieved that he could finally help his father even though it was just a spirit.
When Joseph got back and entered the guild, there were soldiers asking Rebecca about him. One of the soldiers saw Joseph, "You! Joseph Tampus, by the order of King Rhaast, you are to be sent to the Colosseum of Guilt to undergo the punishment for killing one an undercover soldier among the guild you destroyed previously.
Joseph's eyes widened in surprise, how unfair was this? He saved the lives of so many people by destroying that sub-guild but in the end, he will have to fight to the death in the Colosseum of Guilt.
Upon going through everything, when he saw the youth named Arthur being able to learn techniques at which even he took a long time to learn, he knew that this kid was special. After hearing that he is probably from another realm it gave Joseph a sliver of hope that the way how this kid managed to travel from another realm to this realm could also be used for Joseph and his father to be sent to Lien,
The feat that Arthur did where he defended against three attacks of his father where even he could not make him certain that this was the correct person to learn Wisp Swordsmanship.
