Kang Jun turned to look at the fork that had landed near the girls heeled foot and frowned.
"It's closer to you."
Rong Yue Wan's face immediately palled. Seeing this, Elder Kang's face scrunched up in anger. The old man slammed the table with considerable strength, causing several people to turn around and look at them.
"Be kinder to her! Not too long ago she was your fiancée."
Kang Jun shrugged as he continued to cut Kang Mingyu's steak. "I don't see the correlation."
Feeling defeated, the frowning Rong Yue Wan bent down to pick up the fork. Once she picked it up, her hands tightened around its slim form. 'Stupid fork! Why didn't you land further away!' the girl whined internally.
Putting the utensil back on the table, Rong Yue Wan could still sense the tense atmosphere, so she smiled at Elder Kang sweetly.
"It's okay Elder Kang, Ah Jun was right, the fork, it was right beside me…"
"Nonsense! And child, call me grandfather. We're practically family."
As soon as those words came from Elder Kang's mouth, Rong Yue Wan smiled bashfully. Kang Mingyu who had been watching the scene couldn't help but frown more. It wasn't that he didn't like his great-grandfather or Rong Yue Wan, but the boy had sharp eyes.
He didn't understand how his great-grandfather could be so blind.
Rong Yue Wan didn't notice the young boys look.
At this point in time, she was fairly glad that the old man still treated her like close family despite all that had happened in the past.
Rong Yue Wan was always Kang Jun's parents first choice, after Qiao Lan, when it came to being a wife of the Kang's. Though she had been Kang Jun's second fiancée.
The first one appointed to him was the daughter of his grandmother's good friend. But after Kang Jun and the girl had decided to not marry due to mutual differences, Old Madam Kang had no other choice but to accept the situation.
Unlike Old Madam Kang though, Kang Mu and Elder Kang were slightly delighted because that meant they would be able to set Kang Jun up with Rong Yue Wan.
The good thing about Rong Yue Wan was that she was not only Qiao Jianhong's assistant and Secretary Rong's niece, but she was also Qiao Lan's good friend. Even if Rong Yue Wan joined the family there would be no fights between the daughter in laws. That alone made them like her, but the best thing was that the girl had a genuine interest in Kang Jun and was fine with his coldness and explosive temper.
Thinking back to good old times, the elder smiled back at the girl and then he turned to look at Kang Jun with a glare."Apologize."
This time, Kang Jun did as Elder Kang had asked.
Rong Yue Wan smiled, with a slight blush. "It's okay, you really don't have to worry about it."
Taking her words to heart, Kang Jun didn't.
That time, he had to admit he had been unnecessarily mean to the Rong Yue Wan. She hadn't done anything to him. The only thing was that she had disturbed his happy time with Lu AnLing. But the one who should truly bear the blame was Elder Kang and, partially Secretary Rong.
Hearing Kang Jun's apology, Kang Mingyu raised his eyebrows and so did Elder Kang.
Elder Kang looked between Kang Jun and Rong Yue Wan.
'Maybe there was still something there… ' the old man hoped. He even wondered if it was Rong Yue Wan the one who Kang Jun had fallen in love with, but quickly he realized how foolish he was. If that was the case, wouldn't the boy have married her the first time around?
Thinking about it Elder Kang frowned slightly.
He hoped that Kang Jun could learn to love Rong Yue Wan but he didn't have his hopes up. He hoped the girl loved by his grandson was worth it and able to withstand the frigidity. He felt a bit bad for the girl...
'Rong Yue Wan is still the best choice... Kang Jun will realize this someday.' The elder said internally with conviction.
Though he didn't know how wrong he was...
If Kang Jun had heard those words, he would have completely shut the elder down.
He was reaching.
Once upon a time, Rong Yue Wan had been Kang Jun's fiancee, but now, she was nothing to him.
To begin with, Kang Jun never truly liked her all that much. She was a childhood friend who, unlike most girls he knew, showed more interest in things such as school and business rather than clothing and socializing but looking at her now, Kang Jun felt like she had changed.
He didn't really care though, it was just an observation.
Back then, the engagement was just a formality for Kang Jun. He was just following the orders of his parents until 'a certain situation' gave him the opportunity to annul their engagement.
Many people were disappointed in him after he'd done that, because to them, Rong Yue Wan was a godsend. To Kang Jun, however, she was nothing more than a little sister. He treated her neither coldly nor kindly.
Besides, the girl never had a chance. Kang Jun's body had never reacted to her. Though not just her, but to anyone for that matter.
Well… at least not until yesterday.
Kang Jun's aura softened.
Feeling this, Elder Kang felt at ease. So he took the opportunity to talk about why he had truly come that day.
"Mingyu will be coming back home with me today."
Kang Jun paused. He had no expression after hearing the old man's statement. Meanwhile, Kang Mingyu's face went pale. The boy turned to look at his second uncle, pleadingly. He didn't want to go back there…Though this look wasn't necessary.
Kang Jun wasn't planning on letting the elder have his way.
"No." Kang Jun said.
Elder Kang glared at Kang Jun.
"You'll be away on a business trip soon. It would be completely irresponsible to leave Mingyu in a hotel room."
Kang Jun still didn't budge. "I'll drop him off at my villa and let the nanny take care of him."
No argument Elder Kang would bring up seemed to make the slightest of dents in Kang Jun's resolve. This made the elder want to explode.
Elder Kang: "No! I refuse. He will go back with me tonight!"
Kang Jun thought about using the contract against the elder, but it wouldn't work since it wouldn't come into full power until the day he got married. Either way, he had other plans for that.
This left Kang Jun with no choice but to comply.
"Fine, but you can't let Qiao Lan take him anywhere and if you leave the house, you have to bring him with you or drop him off at my villa."
This was the only way to ensure that Kang Mingyu wouldn't be hurt by Qiao Lan.
Though Elder Kang didn't understand why Kang Jun was making such a strange request, he accepted it nonetheless. There was no one person that was going to get all that they had wanted, so they learned how to compromise.
But before the conversation ended, Kang Jun spoke once more, "Also, he stays with me tonight. I'll drop him off before I leave."
"Fine."
Hearing their conversation Kang Mingyu's face began to turn ashen and green.
He didn't want to go back to the Kang old house. He wanted to stay in the hotel so he could be with his auntie. His auntie would take care of him, even if Kang Jun was gone. He was sure of it. However, as much as Kang Mingyu wanted to say that, he understood why he couldn't.
"May I be excused…" The young boy sighed.
Looking at his pale complexion, Rong Yue Wan looked at the boy with worry. "Do you need to go to the bathroom? I can take you."
Kang Mingyu frowned. "I can go by myself."
"No, it's fine. it's no bother. I'm worried about something happening to you. You don't look good at all." Rong Yue Wan stood up from her chair and walked all the way to Kang Mingyu.
'Maybe it's no bother to you but it's a great bother to me…'
The boy's frown worsened, but everyone assumed that it was because he was sick. Only Kang Jun understood but there was no way he could save him.
Sadly for Kang Mingyu, he couldn't refuse the woman. Hand in hand, the boy allowed himself to be led towards the bathroom reluctantly. Watching this, Elder Kang's lips curled into a smile. Rong Yue Wan would make a good mother and wife!
When the boy and the woman were out of sight, Secretary Rong excused himself from the table in order to make a call. This left Kang Jun and Elder Kang alone.
The atmosphere was cold and silent for a moment, but Elder Kang couldn't stand it so he said the first thing that came to mind. Hearing the first part of the old man sentence, Kang Jun wanted to groan. This old man always spoke trash!
"Rong Yue Wan is such a fine woman, I don't understand why you—"
"Did you tell anyone about the contract?" Kang Jun interrupted.
Elder Kang's face dropped.
"Did you or did you not?" Kang Jun lowered his voice to make himself sound more intimidating.
It worked.
Elder Kang was frozen in time.
"Only one person." the old man uttered.
"Who?"
Elder Kang took a moment to curse his son from the bottom of his heart.
That morning, the elder had gotten a call from his wife who asked him if the rumors of Kang Jun being willing to marry was true. At that point, Elder Kang knew that he had messed up.
What ghost of stupidity had possessed him to trust Kang Mu…
"Well—" The elder began, but then, suddenly, the old turned to look at someone from across the room. It was a man he didn't know well. Taking this as an opportunity to save himself, he called to him, "Ah hello! Long time no see."
Elder Kang pushed himself up from his chair and hurried the man's way.
Leaving Kang Jun frowning.
