Greg was a terrible patient. He was whining, needy and demanded a tremendous amount of attention for himself. By lunchtime, Lana was exhausted, while trying to take care of him and not succumb to his provocation. It's good that it was a weekend and she not only didn't have to go to work but could also make the children help her to care of the patient. Besides, she urgently needed to contact Daniel.
Finally, she managed to sneak away from Greg on the pretext of preparing dinner, leaving him with Vicky.
"Lana?" - She heard a familiar voice from the receiver, - "God, it's so good that you called. Where are you? I didn't know how to contact you."
"Daniel, I'm sorry I did not call. It was just so chaotic. I needed time to come to my senses."
" I understand. Listen, we have so much to discuss."
"Wait, Daniel, I have to tell you first. Something happened." - Lana interrupted him.
" What?" - his voice became anxious. - "Are you alright?"
"Yes and no. First, tell me, is Ralph still in Bennin?"
Daniel did not answer right away.
"Ralph is here. But ... Rumors began to circulate in the pack.
I'm sure it's he who stirs things up. They say that I actually forced you and the children to leave the town and Ralph. And I imprisoned him only because I'm afraid that he will try to take my place. Some already left the pack without any notice. And in the town, some whispers are flying about. I do not know how long I can keep it quiet."
" Incidentally, among the one who abandoned the town, was there Ray or Scott?" - Lana asked cautiously.
"Yes, it was them, how did you know?" - in the voice of Daniel appeared a dangerous wolf's growl.
"They attacked us with the children yesterday in the Park, at night, during the full moon." - Lana confessed. The situation twisted like a spring, and Lana no longer could predict what's going to happen next.
"God, are you okay?" - Daniel immediately asked, worried.
" I'm fine. But a few people were hurt, ordinary humans who were there and ... Ray is dead. I don't know about Scott. He was shot a few times but ran away on his own."
"Who killed Ray?" - Alpha squeezed out in a low, hoarse voice. No matter how bad this guy was before, his was still Daniel's kin, he was a part of the family.
"It was Greg, my Mate. He is an ordinary human and doesn't even know about us. He was only defending himself," - Lana blurred out, gathered all her will, trying to justify Greg. There was a silence in the receiver.
"You telling me that you found your Mate and he's a human?" - Dan finally asked after a long silence.
Lana paused for a moment. She didn't want to throw everything on Daniel like that. But everything is already entangled, and the problems are growing like a snowball with each second.
"I've known him for a long time actually, and Ralph also knew about it." - she finally admitted.
"Are you saying that all this time you not only tolerated the constant humiliation from Ralph, who was not even your Mate, but also knew exactly who your real Mate is?" - exhaustion crept into Daniel's voice.
"That's exactly why I endured all this!"- she fired back. - "Dan, he's just a human. Ralph already attacked him once. He promised to kill Greg if I meet him again. I am sure, it was him who sent Ray and Scott here."
"Lana, do you understand what you're saying? Attacking a human is a grave crime. According to our laws, Ralph must be taken to the Council." - Slowly stated Alfa.
"Dan, you know, that I couldn't do this. I don't give a fig about him, but he is the father of my children. He would be sentenced to death, no other option. How could I do this to Nicky and Vicky?" - Lana's voice began to tremble. She sat on a chair, unable to stand any longer.
" Lana, please calm down, not everything is lost yet. Don't forget, I'm still Alpha. I'll try to talk to him. That's my duty deal with my kinsmen after all. But you have to tell your Greg everything. He is up to the ears in all this already. And he doesn't have a clue what's going on. He won't be ready to react if something happens. Think about it!"
Lana took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts.
"All right, Dan. I really appreciate it. I don't know how to thank you enough…"
"Lana," - He interrupted. - "Although you came into this pack before I became an Alfa, all this time you were a part of my family. The fact that I couldn't take care of you and allowed what Ralph did to you under my nose is on me. And I'm sorry. Even if you, Vicki with Nicky left Bennin, this doesn't mean that you ceased to be a part of our pack. Here some people still worried about you and love no matter what, as part of the family. So do not thank me. I do what I should have done a long time ago."
It was hard for Lana to take control over her emotions and say goodbye to Daniel, hanging up. Covering her face, Lana tried to hold back her tears, but treacherous sobs slipped through her fingers. All this time she thought, she was alone, and there is nowhere to go for help. Lana endured and clenched her teeth.
And now, when so many people were supporting her, everything that was done up till now seemed so useless. Like Don Quixote fighting with windmills.
And what now? No matter how she struggled, other people were still dragged into this mess. Again, before Lana's eyes, a string of closed doors arose. And she was so scared to make the wrong chose again!
A warm palm rested on her shoulder. She looked up through the veil of unshed tears and saw Nicky's troubled face. It immediately became clear that he had heard everything.
"Mum," - he called, gently stroking her shoulder. Lana expected that he would begin to inquire, but instead, he smiled slightly. - "Vicky and I decided to go to the movies and then for some pizza on the way back. So you don't have to cook. We'll be back in three hours. You stay with Greg, ok?"
Lana looked at Nicky with a puzzled expression at first. Then she grasped the hidden meaning behind his words, Lana felt her ears begin to turn red.
***
Vicky was a wonderful girl. So a positive and caring. But as a nurse for Greg, she was terrible. Her constant chatter at first amused him. She asked so many questions, then without letting Greg open his mouth, answered them herself.
Five minutes later, he already knew all the latest gossip from her school, in ten all the novelties of teenage fashion, and after fifteen minutes already began to fall into some kind of trance. As a hypnotist, she could surely make a ton of money.
He did not even notice how he fell asleep under her steady chirping over his ear. Only when, through the sleep, he felt the mattress bend under someone's weight, Greg began to surface from the dreamland.
As soon as the person nested near and hugged Greg, he immediately felt the familiar heat spreading throughout the body. So strange, he couldn't recognize any girl even if he try very hard, but Lana was different.
Even her light touch made every cell on his skin tremble and vibrate in anticipation. The places where her quiet breath fell, the goosebumps appeared by themselves. Merely lying next to each other, they seemed to be tied with something unreal, from inside out.
Greg felt her sadness and fear at the tips of his fingers, just passing his hand over her shoulder. She pressed closer, not allowing him to look into her eyes. Greg didn't need it, though. The confusion of her soul seemed to pour through her skin and with this strange connection to him. And he didn't like this. His Lana should not be sad, shouldn't have any doubt or be afraid. And he knew exactly how to chase away all the bad thoughts from her beautiful little head.
"Let me cherish you, too. Cause you are my treasure!" - Greg whispered in her ear, catching in the kiss the puffy lips that began to stretch in a surprised smile.
