章節 118: Siege of Herewealth Manor (2)

"Father! The archers have stopped with their shooting." Edgar said while observing the battlefield. A dozen of archers had died under the suppressing fire that came from the other side. However, unknown to the opposite side, there was still a large number of archers left which were hidden.

"Sir! The archers are making way for the infantry." It was one of the outlooks that relayed the news.

Hearing this, a sly grin formed up on Jake's face. 'Good. Let them come closer. They will love the surprise that I have planned for them' Jake thought as he was observing the battle.

Looking over to his troops, he understood that he was outnumbered. However, if they were able to hold on for a couple of days, reinforcements would be arriving from the various mercenary companies. Right before James set down the blockade and siege, he sent out several of his retainers to find prominent mercenary companies and hire their service. However, now was the time to suppress the enemies.

"The infantry is in shooting range sir!" The lookout reported quickly.

Hearing this, Jake signaled one of his retainers. It was the signal for the remaining archers to move out and suppress the incoming enemies. "Archers, move out, and wait for orders!" the lieutenants started to order.

The archers that were left quickly took their position and got at the ready. Quickly preparing an arrow to shoot, they looked with anxiousness to Jake for his order.

Jake closer his eyes. The grin on his face started to grow. It was as if he could already imagine all the soldiers that dared to defy him begging for mercy. The thing that excited him the most was the various methods that he would be torturing James. 'Maybe I will defy that bitch called Loraine in front of him?' As thoughts of victory started to enter his mind, he slowly opened up his eyes. With a signal, the order was given for the archers to loose their arrows.

With that, the various lieutenants ordered, "Loose! Shoot down the enemies! Make them regret that they dared to defy the Herewealth family!"

With the order given, the sky started to fill itself with dozens of arrows. "Do not stop shooting until further order is given! Keep on shooting!" Orders continued to be given.

"Sir, it looks like the infantry is about to reach the walls" a guard said excited. "If this continues, we might even be done with the fight before the day is over." The guard added in a positive voice.

The mouth of James, who received the news, started to slowly form into a smile. 'I hope that nothing goes…' Before his thoughts could finish, he noticed the dozens of arrows that filled the sky and was about to fall upon his men. Even the smile that was forming froze up. With a shocked face he watched as the infantry were getting pounded by arrows.

'A trap. We have walked into a trap.' slow mutter could be heard from him. Looking around with a shocked face, he was frozen at a moment.

Luckily Edward was quick to respond and gave out orders at a high voice, "Sent the remaining archers back! Suppress their incoming fire!"

Thanks to the quick response of Edward, the order was given for the archers who were about to return back to the line, to go back in and start shooting again. Because this took some time, the casualties were higher than they had wanted. However, this also helped them to suppress the incoming archer arrows somewhat.

Under the support of the allied archers, the infantry slowly pushed forward. However, the look on the faces of the troops looked rather grim. The initial certainty that they had was gone. They had lost most of their motivation. This became even worse because of the strong smell of blood that started to linger in the fields.

'This is not good.' Thought Edward as he saw the situation unfold. Looking over at James, he noticed that he was absent minded. 'I have to do something.' He thought to himself. With that, he ordered out, "Call back the infantry. It is time to rest out. Sent also news to the other armies to also retreat. This will be it for now."

In the end, they decided to abandon the idea of approaching the walls, as the morale of the troops had plummet. Seeing their friends lie down on the ground, many soldiers lost the will to fight. Edward took the initiative to pull out the troops before the situation would be worse. With that, the soldiers were ordered to return back to the base and rest up a bit.

Due to this major blunder, James had lost 30 men out of the 100 that he had. This was a major blow to him. The expectation of finishing off the battle in just one day was thus gone. The worst part was that the opposite side would have minimum casualties during this engagement.

This thought infuriated James. However, he had to admit his defeat, as he slowly retreaded to the tent to look at the overall situation of the battle.
