He awoke from his slumber, feeling as if his head was taking a beating from something.
His composure was groggily and he had disheveled hair for sleeping on the floor like that. He checked the time before finding out in just 4 minutes, the session bell would ring.
He didn't render it instantly and finally had his eyes widen when a minute passed. He ran out of the library that instant. He was about to be late to a session study.
'I can't be late! Accelerate!'
Being one of the Level 0 Spells he learned, Accelerate was a spell that boosted the body's athletic capabilities and increased it by half. The original spell would usually have repercussions as it would make metabolism go faster and would succumb to hunger much sooner.
But the theories found in the Zero Vatican showed that there were superior methods of casting such magics and held magical properties due to the copy method to duplicate the original. It was a 4th generation that got copied off a 3rd generation book of the original that gave him a superior method of acceleration without the repercussions, simply being fast. But some books in the Zero Vatican had some originals as they accepted books from their graduates being in superior mage towers with their own method and knowledge of magic.
He was sure he would gain much more proficiency if he could get his hands on a original book.
He sprinted towards the room where the session would be and quickly raced off. Of course, theories aren't always correct nor is it always wrong, some of the book he ate was simply copied or made with magic but had no power in giving spells, he delightfully ate them though since they gave him substance to not starve, feeling that he needed to eat everyday to keep his stomach together.
He made it to the door, where he professor was starting to close it before the bell.
The teacher noticed this and halted himself so that the student could get in, the bell didn't ring yet. The moment he used his foot to stop his acceleration, a small dust cloud appeared before his feet when it entered the room. The bell range with powerful chimes notifying to the whole academy classes were starting.
The teacher didn't speak for awhile as the sight was to behold so early in the morning.
"Teacher. Sorry for being late."
He finally spoke.
"Ehem, moving on!"
He got back from his trance and coughed to alert everyone to stay focused.
Ray went to the back of the room like always when Adam, thinking the time was right, reached out his foot to the side of his desk to trip over Ray.
Ray's capabilities seemed to have reached new heights and not only with his superior intellect and memorization skill, it seems everything was moving slower after he devoured the books and was taught the spells correlating to it. Eating was like an exercise for his brain as well.
He saw the foot when he was walking and with his reflex, he stumbled before and got over the foot before getting back his stance.
Adam and his friends thought they were gonna get a laugh from it, but instead were infuriated by his attempt.
He successfully reached back to his solitude corner in the back and read more books.
With his new wisdom from the teachers in his inner space, his level of understanding reached new heights, even able to find the probability of gaining spells or increasing spell efficiency from a book.
His composure was still as the only thing in his mind was reading and understanding the epitome of books at his finest, even able to block out the teacher's lecture, but using context clues and his observation skills, it was simply about magic circles, a continuation to yesterday's evening class, the one he skipped. Students don't have to necessarily attend them, but each month, an evaluation exam would occur to test if a student was ready to graduate or not, and the classes from those who already graduate was a good lesson to pass the exam to be allowed to graduate. It was common sense to take them, but people skip them occasionally to do more important matters.
The bell rung before Ray was out of his trance, and today just so happened to be the day of the monthly evaluation exam.
Being split into 3 parts. One was testing practical magical knowledge, the second was more based on using their own wisdom to complete a thesis on magic, and the last was application in real world situation, combat practice. The first two was an easy pass for Ray, but due to his quality mana, he wasn't able to apply his knowledge in his combat demonstration to the teachers since he would lack the mana afterwards to continue. Students would be pitted against one another to act as a safeguard and a boundary of standardization to graduate.
Due to their relations with the Moire Nobility, a field trip was planned to enact the evaluation to the courtyard of the baron's castle, and where the written exam would start.
The fine carriages of the academy arrived at the main entrance where a main gate was lined up with multiple statues of griffins and other epics of the time. ray felt strange looking at each monster, a sense of deja vu almost. After about 15 steps, a fountain would then be seen at the center instead of the statuettes and many flora and fauna decor as well.
They promoted this location to be the best place to enact the evaluation due to the effects of nature to enhance their connection to the world and give them serene minds.
At arrival to the courtyard after following a line of students across numerous vast corridors finally took them in the courtyard, where a man with a chubby stomach and a mustache commonly seen on evildoers when they twiddle on them was seen wearing lavish clothes like silk and jewelry.
"Welcome students! To my humble abode, come, sit! Allow your surroundings to immerse yourself in magical knowledge!"
He had no idea what he was saying. The man was Adam's father, Baron Claude von Moire, a Level 4 Magician that goes by the name as the Flame King, a rather peculiar nickname for someone only at the level of the 4th circle. He was known to be extremely flamboyant that brags about his wealth and his fiery temper that comes along with his aptitude of fire magic.
All the students that numbered almost a thousand students sat themselves in the large courtyard overlooking the city and all went silent to begin testing.
The first part was basic alchemical knowledge, a major that isn't very popular though it carries a prestige due to the learning curve of making potions. Many students were stumped since they never took that course. But Ray and some others passed it easily.
A small break was given to the students to brainstorm for their next part, some don't take the break seriously and just chat with one another since they would get another chance next month.
"Man, did you get question 23?"
"I was stuck on that one too....."
"Well, there is always next time right?"
"Yeah."
They needed to pass all three parts to get the ability to graduate. People talked as if time was not of the essence as they enjoyed campus life in the academy, eating luxury food and having parties disguised as group studies. The more they wait, the more their talents are wasted as it slowly rots.
Some took it seriously, like Ray, but due to his mana deficiency, he had a road block that stopped him from passing it.
But now it was different.
The second part just began and Ray finished in the first 15 minutes. The main topic of the thesis was about mana fluctuations and how it affects the world
45 minutes remained until the third part begins, the part where Adam would fight with Ray would start. Students were allowed to challenge other students who are at the same level or higher level than themselves to take part in the final part and though Adam was the one who challenged him, he would have everyone deny his challenge and he would fail the exam anyways.
He read the chants in his mind without any mana so it wouldn't be casted, as if it were a mantra.
This would be an amazing fight to watch, to the standards of a student duel at the least.
