well it is a fanfic and since James is not joining the team rocket then it's already an AU so you can adjust timeline however you wish as for which gyrados it doesn't matter much as long as it's potential is good my only reason for recommending lance's gyrados was so that lance don't catch it and that way in final masters tournament James would be the only one with shiny gyrados. that's also the reason why i recommend shiny tyranatar for his dark type because although it is considered top 3 psudo legendary with Garchomp and metagross it didn't get the time to shine like the other two and also hydreigon looks really weird with his head hands and legs without toes.
