It seems like he try to maintain busy to improve himself but the 'duel' is not passed yet. And then when his father says 'are you happy'? He remembered all that thoughts. This step is necessary to fully recover and at least for me has sense. Maybe i'm wrong, dunno. Anyway is a great novel. love it
