Although that may be true with her, she still is the mother of his son. He, Mubai, is showing that he is a good man still wanting to help out the mother of his son even though they are divorced. And it has nothing to do with his new interest in her because he was trying to help her get back on her feet since the beginning of the novel while still showing her and her wishes respect by not forcing her to do anything she didn’t want to.
