Spencer is a war time veteran trying to find someway to help himself deal with his PTS from his time in the military. His diagnosis of breachers syndrome had cost him everything. His family was scared away by the stories in the media. His friends were either still in or treated him with pity. Hoping to find some comfort in his new life as a civilian he moved in with his eccentric cousin who talks him into VR gaming. Specifically the game his cousin helped make. Spencer was roped into playing it as part of medical research project. Maybe this will fix him. Or maybe the realism of the world will create new wounds.
