I actually have played Ranger. And it is really fun if you can plan ahead and talk to the DM. I personally played a Lizardman Ranger during a swamp campaign, I was basically a local and guide, maybe not the best mechanically, but the build really led into some good roleplay

I really enjoy their dynamic right now, twin brothers, a warrior, and a blacksmith, one makes the tools and the other uses them, it's kinda perfect, I think I'm gonna write something similar as NPCs for my next D&D game

I'm not trying to change your opinion, I'm trying to share my own. The fact is sure, the ranger was confused about what it wanted to be, but it's still a valid option that gives access to a variety of abilities and roleplay opportunities. And it's not exaclty about the quality of the DM, it's about the quality of the session 0, the world being played, and the roleplay akill of the player
