Your comment makes sense, but you miss the point as did the op. This is a Chinese web novel translated after the fact into English for the English-speaking person's reading pleasure. Thus the assumed English conversation is just the author saying it's an English conversation, not one that is written in English. Thus it is a Chinese conversation using Chinese language structures, Thus the Chinese pun that doesn't translate into English. It has nothing to do with the characters in the novel. It has to do with the language the novel was originally written in. Yes, the fictional burly dude probably doesn't know Chinese...just as much as the real author doesn't know English. This is why you have a conversation using Chinese language rules in what is told to the readers is an English conversation. It's just background fluff to give the story flavor. Just remember it's a Chinese novel first before it was ever translated into English so instances of this happen. Your very right it's all convoluted, but it is just a symptom of the original writing being lazy and the translation being sloppy and nothing else.

Hell with the prevalence of non-complete ownership with 30-year mortgages. Most squatters have no right to the properties they squat in (except in extremely rare cases of completely abandoned privately owned properties with squatters fulfilling all legal provisions to gain legal recognition of ownership). Despite the laws in place in certain jurisdictions to protect "squatter rights", for most properties once the owning bank is informed of the abandonment and subsequent extra-legal occupation of the property, they would easily send the jackboots to sweep away the undesirables.
