Calix quietly stared at Xander, sensing the regret in every word he spoke about his breakup with Violet. The gentle lapping of water against the lake bank created a soothing yet melancholy backdrop.
Behind them, Calliope was still energetically playing with Ryken and Davin. Leslie remained the watcher as she enjoyed the apple cider and the leftover apple pie.
Xander's voice had grown lower and softer, imbued with the weight of regrets toward the end of his relationship with Violet.
"A breakup... She wanted one, instead of just a temporary separation," Xander sighed deeply, clasping his hands together as he stared into the shimmering lake, "I have to agree. I've hurt her more times than I can count."
Calix found it hard to comfort Xander verbally. He awkwardly extended his hand, weakly patting his friend's broad back.
Once again, Xander showed his weak side to him. Seeing it still surprised Calix despite having witnessed it before.
