If only I could do it all over again, I wouldn't want to live like this anymore.

What a failure I've turned out to be, huh.

Qin Yi collapsed onto the bed, bending her arms to cover her eyes, her eyelashes trembling slightly, finally letting the tears fall.

In the gynecology and obstetrics surgery corridor of the Beijing military hospital several men in uniform stood or sat, surrounded by two young women and an elderly lady, all exuding high-class anxiety. Passers-by couldn't help but steal glances at them, curious about the low pressure that seemed to envelop this group.

"Look here, old man, can you drop the stern face, please? Your daughter-in-law is having a baby boy today, such a joyous occasion, and you're making it so solemn," the dignified elderly lady complained to the person at the center of the low pressure.

The old man seemed not to hear her; his expression did not improve, still sitting stiffly in the middle.

Seeing her husband ignore her, the elderly lady glanced at him unhappily, then turned and said to her younger son, "Why hasn't it happened yet, weren't they saying the baby's position was fine? Ah, I told you, she should have had more nutrition, look how frail your wife is, giving birth is just her suffering, none of you take my words seriously."

The youngest-looking young man beside her nodded obediently, helping his mother to sit down, his usually cold face also showing a tinge of anxiety.

Right then, the surgery room light went off, the long-closed door opened, and the head nurse, holding a newborn, exited. The anxious group outside the door, as if by silent agreement, rushed forward.

"Congratulations, commander, it's a precious daughter, mother and daughter are both safe," the head nurse said with a smile to the crowd around her. Yet, it was evident from her slightly stiff expression that she was quite nervous, given the impressive entourage, not something she'd encounter often in her life.

"What, what did you say? A girl?" Upon hearing the head nurse's words, the crowd stared at her in disbelief. The first to speak out was the commanding old man sitting behind them.

Inside, the head nurse sighed, though she didn't dare show it. Ah, another family that values boys over girls. But then, for a family of such status, they would need a son to carry on the family legacy. She looked sorry for the quietly open-eyed infant in her arms, such a beautiful child, unlike any she had ever seen, what a pity. She held the infant close and reluctantly nodded her head.

The young woman in a white coat from the crowd was the first to step forward, pulling aside a little of the blanket wrapped around the infant. Her eyes instantly brightened. Turning around, she said excitedly, "Really, really a girl!"

They wouldn't just abandon her, would they? The head nurse watched as several people stood there motionless, their faces twisted, their eyes shining as they looked at the infant. Suddenly, she recalled a little girl who had been abandoned at another hospital just a few days ago. She wrestled with whether she should report the situation to her superiors. She had assumed that such influential people would be different; had she known, she wouldn't have volunteered for this duty. Could she be held responsible as well? She could already foresee her bleak future.

The infant in the head nurse's arms was actually the calmest at the moment, her dark eyes scanning the room.

No wonder they say babies can't see; even at their widest, they can only see blurred figures up close. Her gaze landed on the nurse holding her, and just by looking at her expression, she knew what she was thinking. She frowned inwardly; she had no control over the nurse's vivid imagination, as long as she didn't drop her.

It wasn't without reason that the head nurse was overthinking; not even families with newborn sons were this emotional. Moreover, with the one-child policy in place, some people were even less pleased with having a daughter. And these people had been so gloomy throughout the pregnancy; now they were acting so oddly, the head nurse couldn't help but have misgivings.

Finally, a few seconds later, everyone regained their composure and simultaneously tidied up their expressions, attempting to revert to their original seriousness. Yet, their hurried steps and the hands vying to hold the baby still betrayed their emotions.

"Attention!" bellowed the senior from behind everyone. Reflexively, everyone stood up straight.

In that instant, the old man stepped briskly past the crowd and snatched the baby, oblivious to the various forlorn gazes around him, holding the little one in his arms excitedly yet carefully.

"Heheh, heheheh, hahahaha," the old man's laughter grew louder, a stark contrast from the commanding presence he had just a moment ago.

The baby, too, seemed curious, staring back at the old man with big, clear, and serious eyes, unlike a newborn who can hardly open its eyes. However, everyone was too caught up in their excitement to pay any heed to such details.

"My granddaughter, oh, my granddaughter, the treasure of our Qin Family!" the old man exclaimed, happily chattering nonstop.

Granddaughter? Is this the grandfather? She remembered that her father's grandfather had passed away when he was young, and every time the family reminisced, they would say how he adored girls and that if he were still alive, she would have been spoiled rotten. She had regretted more than once that her grandfather had died too early; could this be a dream come true?

"Oh my, so beautiful, doesn't look like a newborn at all. Those brows and eyes, as full as a one-month-old baby's," said a young woman in a white coat, leaning forward.

The baby looked towards the woman following her voice. Was this a younger version of the great-aunt? And this sentence, every time her family mentioned her own childhood, they would repeat it. What exactly was going on? The little one fell into deep thought.

"Let me see, let me see, at last, our Qin Family has a girl, I thought our generation was doomed to have none!" another woman exclaimed joyously.

The old lady tugged at her excessively excited daughter, "Lower your voice; don't startle my granddaughter! Let me take a look, let grandma see. Oh, she really looks like her father, so handsome!" she laughed so hard she could barely close her mouth.

The child's father had been watching his daughter from the side. Although he didn't show his excitement as openly as the other family members, his expression softened quite a bit when he looked at the little one.

"When my sister-in-law was pregnant, it seemed definitely to be a boy, and I was quite disappointed for a while. Little treasure, look at me, my goodness, so adorable. Why didn't I have a daughter!" the woman who seemed to be the great-aunt exclaimed.

The man in military uniform next to the woman wrapped his arms around his overly excited wife, and even his sharp-featured face showed a smile, "Dad, all those names were meant for boys. We didn't expect my sister-in-law to have a girl. Looks like we'll have to think of some new names."

As soon as the family heard this, they all nodded in agreement and looked towards the old man, who was solely focused on entertaining the baby. But seeing the old man in such a jovial state made them shiver, the usually stern and reticent figure was suddenly so foolishly happy, it felt a bit unsettling.

"Come up with one, come up with ten thousand, I'd be happy to. I have to think carefully, to give my granddaughter the best name! What shall we call her, what shall we call her," the old man kept muttering as he eyed the baby in his arms, and perhaps it was an illusion, but it seemed like he saw a glint of anticipation in the little one's eyes.
