The room where supper was held was divided into 3 areas. On one end, there were long dining tables which were occupied by those from the older generation, those who were socializing in groups composed of mostly married folks, and those who simply did not have a date or someone to dance with before the intermission.
In the middle area, there were long buffet tables where guests can simply pick what they want to eat.
Then, on the other end, which was where Serena, Charlton, and Annalys were, there were tables good for 2 to a maximum of 4 which were occupied by ladies and gentlemen who had their dance before the intermission or by those who were in the marriage mart and their companions.

As Serena sat on the chair opposite Charlton with Annalys on her right, she decidedly came to realize how stupid and masochistic her decision was. Not the part where she thought that she can be friends with Charlton, but rather the part where she invited him to tag along.
