Chương 3: Birth

The land on the eastern edge of the Begnion, near the edge of the ocean, was governed by a small noble family. The family was not very influential nor powerful, but they did live semi-wealthy lifestyles due to them specializing in light magic and healing. It was due to their powers that they earn a steady income and could even afford a few slaves.

One of these slaves that they bought was a green dragon beastman named Dale, who had been captured when he was young. He was bought by the family and was treated like a trophy of some sort. Every day he labored hard, only to have two menial meals a day and a pile of hay for a bed.

Life was always poor to him, but the one thing that made his life much better was the young miss of the family, Thera. Ever since they were young, she was the only person that treated him well and healed him when he was abused by her family. Eventually, as they grew up together, their feelings became that similar to love. However, with how the world is today, had to keep their feelings in check and their relationship a secret.

The early year of 624 marked a grand event as slavery was now illegalized in Begnion. Misha, the apostle of Begnion wanted to promote change, contrary to the Senate who were stuck in the past, and called for the freedom of Laguz slaves. The apostle was a huge influence for the populace and they supported her all the way. It didn't bother them much anyway, only the wealthy could afford slaves. The Senate had no choice but to enforce the laws due to cries of the people.

Due to the new law, Dale was now a free man, but he stuck close to the noble family in order to be closer to Thera. However, in the end, Dale and Thera secretly ran away from their home, traveling to the near edge of the Desert of Death.

The reason for their actions was because Dale secretly got Thera pregnant. Thera's father would most definitely try to kill Dale and the baby if he ever found out so they had no choice but to leave secretly in the night.

They moved and lived north from Culbert, a couple of miles away from the desert. There they lived in isolation, in a small hut-like house. Dale built the home using nearby trees and created a farm so they can sustain themselves. Thera, used some of the money she had to buy some cattle and sheep.

They really had a hard time starting out, but they were barely able to make it using the leftover money for dried food, tools, and supplies. What also helped out was the hunting Dale did.

Since Thera was pregnant with his child, he could no longer transform. He instead used some weapons bought using Thera's money to hunt big game like bears or wolves. He was a Laguz so he was tougher than normal people which gave Thera some comfort.

Their way of living was pretty uncomfortable and tiresome, but it was fulfilling. They both knew the consequences of their actions and had no regrets.

Some months later, Thera finally went into labor. It was tough for Dale, a man, to help out his wife deliver their child alone, but they succeeded in the end with both Thera and the baby alive. Their baby was finally born. They knew a branded baby was socially accepted as a crime against the Goddess, but they didn't care for that and would give this child all the love it deserved.

Needless to say, this child was naturally the reincarnated Rayn. He had his brand mark on his left shoulder and it was surprisingly detailed with it looking like a dragon.

Dale: "It's a boy! Look Thera, you gave birth to a beautiful baby boy."

Thera weakly stretched out her hand.

Thera: "Let me see him, I want to hold him in my arms. He really is beautiful."

Ryan still had his memories from his previous life and quickly figured out that these two people were his mother and father in this world. He really did not want to pretend to be as young as he was supposed to be mentally, but he had to play the role of a newborn baby and started crying.

Dale: "What should we name him?"

Both of them was not able to come up with a name for him before he was born and decided to name him after they saw him. Thera hesitated for a bit before saying the first name that came to her mind.

Thera: "Ryan. Our son will be named Ryan."

Ryan was curious about how his previous life's name was the same in this one, but he immediately thought that God had something to do with it. It did not really matter anyway, but it was convenient.

Ryan: 'I could probably laze around for a bit before I get older. I can't really do anything in this state.'

From the moment he was born Dale and Thera felt like things could only get better from then on. As time passed on, the house grew bigger to support the family and due to Dale's hard work, the family had a great harvest. Thera spent the days watching over Ryan and taking care of him.

Growing up, she could tell that Ryan was more intelligent and more motivated than most babies. Every time he cried it was for either food or poop, he was always curious about everything, and lastly, he had a huge fascination for weapons and magic.

Seeing him react excitedly to every new thing he came across was quite amusing and adorable in her eyes, especially to magic. Sometimes she would conjure up some light just to see his eyes shine like the stars. It was not until she saw him try to do the same thing did she stop smiling and looked at him seriously.

Although he had failed to produce anything, Thera saw that he was able to circulate the mana in his body and the only reason he failed was because he was too weak.

That night Dale and Thera were talking with each other while Ryan slept.

Thera: "Dale. I think we should start teaching Ryan magic."

Dale: "What!? What do you mean? He's only a few months old!"

Thera: "Yes, but a few hours ago, I saw him try to use magic, only to fail because he was not strong enough."

Dale: "So? He failed, doesn't that mean that he shouldn't learn magic?"

Thera: "He couldn't do it because he was too weak. Everything else he did right just by copying me."

When Dale finally understood what she was trying to say, he was shocked. Who had ever heard of a 2 months old baby showing talent in magic.

Dale: "But how can we teach him? I don't think he could read, much less understand what we say."

Thera: "We don't need to do that. Right now he's basically understanding everything just by watching me. Therefore, I'll periodically use light magic in front of him and he'll try to copy. Just the fact that he can circulate his mana means that he'll get stronger after each try."

Dale: "Well, I guess you can do that. I mean you already take care of him most of the time."

Thera: "Exactly. There's nothing to lose. Anyways, time to sleep. You have a farm to take care of."

As the two went to sleep in their room, little did they know that Ryan was awake all along and was able to hear the entire conversation between his parents.

Ryan: 'So that's how people train their magic. They circulate this thing called mana in their bodies. I always wondered what that feeling was.'

The truth is that Ryan had no idea how his mother was able to use magic, he was just making an educated guess. He had always felt something strange within him, different from his body back on Earth. He predicted that this was probably how people used magic and it turns out he was right.

Ryan: 'I guess I know what I'm doing tomorrow. Things are looking up.'

Moving on to next day, things went as expected. While Dale was out working hard in the field, Thera was in the house doing housework and ocasionally doing a light show for Ryan, in order for him to stimulate his curiosity and try to do the same thing. Of course, her actions were not really needed as he planned to do that anyway and he could feel himself getting better at controlling his magic.

Dale and Thera were surprised and delighted by his growth so they kept this up for the coming days and it eventually became a daily thing.

This continued on for a few months and it felt like this would go on for much longer. However, every good thing always eventually meet their end.
