As the sun slowly started rising up over China's capital city and the sunlight began peaking through Ronald's bedroom window, instead of seeing Ronald sleeping peacefully as always, he was currently sat up on his bed staring at the wall with a serious look on his face.
After everything that has happened to Iris so far both mentally and physically in the last couple of days and given Ronald's uncertainty about whether or not his meticulous acting from last night had actually calmed Iris down, Ronald had decided to stay up last night in order to make sure that Iris didn't try to do something stupid... again.
And luckily, she didn't.
Hell, it seemed like she was in such a good mood that it was almost as if she was never depressed to begin with.
So that beckons the question, why did Ronald have a serious look on his face?
It's because...
'Something's not right.'
While Lin Minyi's sisters' subordinates were doing their usual task of fending off Luna's subordinates again last night, all of her subordinates suddenly stopped fighting and immediately fled the scene, allowing Luna's subordinates to secretly hide at Ronald's side again.
And while this does raise concerns as to why Lin Minyi's sister would decide to go back on her words all of a sudden when she knew the extent of his true strength by now, the truth was that Ronald didn't even care about it whatsoever.
After all, he already knew what her weakness was and could just simply threaten her again at any time.
What he was mainly concerned about however was the fact that Luna's subordinates, not even five minutes after they had finally secured a perimeter around Ronald's house once again, all decided to just leave as well.
Like what the hell?
If it had been the Luna he once knew in his previous life, then Ronald would've been pumping his fist in the air and thanking god that Luna isn't trying to embarrass him again for the time being.
But no.
The Luna in this life, the one that wants to protect him and completely shower him with love and affection in this life, is now pulling away her subordinates after going through all of that trouble?
It's just... weird.
'The calm before the storm... huh.'
Well on the bright side of things, since Iris doesn't seem to be depressed anymore even though Ronald still had some doubts about it, and Luna's subordinates aren't currently lurking around him for the time being, he can actually begin shifting his focus onto more important matters today instead of wasting his time closely watching over Iris, like he had originally planned to do.
So with that in mind, Ronald quickly finished his usual morning routine and exited the bedroom door.
"Good morning, Young Master." Iris, who was standing beside Ronald's bedroom door as always, slightly bowed down and greeted him with her usual expressionless face.
"Morning Iris, how's your body holding up?" Ronald glimsped at Iris's injured body and asked.
"Because of the treatment you gave me last night, my body feels infinitely better than before, so thank you, Young Master." Even though Iris responded in her usual aloof tone, she was extremely happy.
In fact, just thinking about everything that had transpired last night and seeing the great lengths Ronald had went through just to make sure she was okay made every single cell in her body tingle in excitement so much that she had to muster up all of her strength in order to prevent herself from straight up lunging at him like a wild animal.
Basically, her infinite love for him somehow grew even bigger.
And it definitely wasn't because she realized that Ronald deeply cared for her like he did back in her previous life, otherwise she would've not been able to compose herself the moment she regressed back.
It was mainly because she knew she had... a chance?
'A chance to become more.'
Ever since she had been regressed back into this world, literally all she had ever done was cook, clean, serve, and protect Ronald...
Essentially she had been living her second life as Ronald's combat maid, and just that.
And to be honest, Iris had been completely fine with being regarded as just that.
After all, wasn't this exactly all she had ever previously wanted in her life?
To be able to watch him smile, laugh, and live his life happily as he wished while she spends the rest of her life serving and protecting him?
That's what she had initially thought as well, but after hearing how Ronald had described her last night, something deep inside of her heart started to awaken and soon she found herself wanting to be more than just his maid... and eventually even started to have thoughts about her trying to replace Luna instead.
And although such a feat sounded completely impossible to accomplish considering that not only were they currently in a master-servant relationship, but Ronald also literally loved Luna to death, Iris felt that she could manage to successfully pull it off.
This was because throughout the entire 7 years she had been with Ronald in her previous life, despite him encountering a numerous amount of beauties out there that could easily make any man fall head over heels in love with them in an instant, not once has she ever seen Ronald highly praise any of them.
At most, he would tell them that they're cute, pretty, or something along those lines.
Of course, this also included her, who was regarded as the epitome of beauty by everyone in the underworld scene.
But not once had he used the term 'beautiful' for any of them.
The only person she has actually ever seen Ronald use the word 'beautiful' for was to, of course, Luna.
So the fact that Ronald actually used the word beautiful to also describe Iris in this life meant that he undoubtedly held her in as high of a regard as he did with Luna.
And since that was the case, she'll do everything within her power to make him see her as a woman and get that heartless bitch out of his heart for good.
'For his sake.'
But of course, she knew that she couldn't rush things just yet and needed to focus on slowly cultivating and building her foundations first.
"No need to thank me, it's only natural that I help you out since you're MY personal maid after all." Completely unaware of what was currently transpiring inside Iris's head, Ronald spoke arrogantly.
"I know, Young Master, but still, thank you." Iris couldn't help but slightly chuckle at how cute Ronald's domineering appearance looked before replying back.
"Whatever makes you sleep better at night." Ronald shook his head as he made his way downstairs to the living room.
From there, he could smell the aroma of freshly cooked food coming from the dining room.
"You made breakfast for me, Iris?" Ronald turned his head towards the vicinity of the dining room and asked.
"I did, Young Master. Is there something wrong?" Considering that she has had always been preparing breakfast, lunch, and dinner for Ronald ever since she had became his personal maid in this life, Iris asked in confusion.
"Not really, it's just that I'm not really in the mood for breakfast right now." Ronald said nonchalantly, then plopped on the couch and raised his legs onto the table.
"Understood, Young Master. I'll wrap them up then." Iris bowed before making her way towards the dining room.
After watching Iris fully disappear from his sights, Ronald then subconsciously stared up at the ceiling and closed his eyes as he fell deep into thought.
Truth be told, ever since he had confirmed that Iris was indeed a "protagonist" about two days ago after her fight with Kedron, Ronald has been thinking nonstop about how he could actually get Iris to kill Ling Feng.
Given the fact that Iris was currently one cultivation level lower than Ling Feng, coupled with the fact that Ling Feng also had that stupid protagonist aura, he knew that if he were to send Iris directly against Ling Feng now, the odds of Iris winning against him would be slim to none.
Now of course, he could just simply help Iris cultivate much faster, thus allowing her to surpass Ling Feng in cultivation levels by providing her with the necessary cultivation materials and whatnot, and call it a day, except...
'I don't know what cultivation material she actually needs.'
Back when Ronald initially talked to the system about whether he could use a protagonist to kill another protagonist, he had asked under the premise of secretly teaching Iris how to cultivate using a more basic cultivation method he had obtained from the system back in his previous life, once he had verified that Iris was indeed a protagonist.
However, since Iris had decided to start randomly use the Fragmented Soul Refinement Arts, a significantly much more advanced cultivation method he knew almost nothing about, as her main foundation for cultivating right before he could actually confirm that she was a protagonist, Ronald wasn't sure exactly what cultivation materials Iris needed in order to cultivate faster.
Not all cultivation methods are equal after all, and while most methods have the basic function of allowing cultivators to absorb qi from their surroundings, the path to cultivation vastly differs from each one.
Not to mention that even if Ronald knew how to accelerate Iris's growth properly and manage to get her to surpass Ling Feng in cultivation level and strength, he still wasn't positive if he could actually use her to take Ling Feng down.
'What to do... what to do...'
Just as Ronald was lost in his thoughts however...
"Young Master."
"Ah! What the hell?!" Suddenly hearing Iris's voice right beside him, Ronald couldn't help but slightly spring up from the couch.
"My apologies, Young Master. I didn't intend to startle you like that. Please forgive me." Iris bowed her head down apologetically.
"I don't care if you didn't mean to scare me like that, you better apologies to me this instant before I..." Suddenly realizing that Iris actually did indeed apologies to him and didn't wait until he had to threaten her to force an apology out of her just like he had to numerous times back in his previous life, Ronald inwardly sighed as he shifted his tone, "Forget it, what do you want?"
"Oh, um, I just finished wrapping the food up in the dining room and since there are no other chores that needs to be done at the moment, I wanted to ask the Young Master if I can take some time off this afternoon." Seeing as though she had accidentally angered Ronald just now, she hesitantly asked for permission.
"Hm? Why's that? Are you tired of serving me already?" Ronald cracked a smile and responded in a playful manner.
"No, Young Master. Serving you gives me eternal bliss, and I'd want nothing more than to continue doing it every second of the day. However, there are a few things I want to buy today, and I'm afraid I might miss my opportunity if I-." Just before Iris could finish speaking though, Ronald suddenly cut her off.
"Yeah yeah yeah, you don't have to actually explain yourself to me, I get it. Just go take the rest of the day off today and stop bothering me." Assuming that Iris just wanted to take some time off today in order to allow her body to somewhat recover from her injuries, Ronald made a shooing gesture and then went back to pondering his thoughts.
But not even a second later however, Ronald suddenly realized what Iris had said.
"Wait a second, did you just say that you wanted to go buy some things?" Ronald quickly turned his head back to Iris, who still hadn't moved from her spot yet, and questioned with a somewhat confused look on his face.
"Um, I did, Young Master." Iris nodded.
"Like what?"
"I'm not sure yet since I don't know if they will available at the capital city or not, Young Master, but I intend on getting things like an octagon-shaped imperial jade plate, 8 black moonstones, and a Longxiu crystal." Iris didn't withhold any information at all and answered truthfully.
Upon hearing what kind of items Iris wanted to buy, Ronald couldn't help but immediately widen up his eyes in shock.
While Iris didn't give out the exact name of the plate that she wanted to buy, and her description of it was so vague that it could easily be mistaken for lots of other cultivation items, he still knew exactly what she wanted.
'Qi Condensing Plate.'
As the name suggested, it was a plate that takes the surrounding Qi from tens of miles away and condenses them around the plate.
Basically it was a cultivation item that allowed cultivators to potentially cultivate much faster.
Now, while this item did seem very strong whilst being simple to get however, the harsh reality of it was that modern cultivators couldn't use it whatsoever.
This is mainly because the Qi that were condensed around the plate would almost immediately dissipate and return back to its surroundings after the plate was activated.
Now of course, there were ways to prevent the Qi from dissipating, like creating an array that traps all the Qi around the plate and such, however, those methods have all ended up being long-forgotten in time.
All modern cultivators knew about this, which was why they never even bothered trying to construct or obtain the plate to begin with.
So the fact that Iris wanted to construct a Qi Condensing Plate even though she most likely knew about all of this beforehand meant that she had some way of actually utilizing it somehow.
But how?
Even with all of the immensive knowledge that he had obtained from the system in his previous life, he still doesn't even know how to do something like that!
'Did this fucking system scam me?!'
As much as Ronald wanted to call out the system right now and reprimand it for how useless it was, Ronald knew that he'd just be wasting his own time.
Besides, it's not like knowing how utilize the Qi Condensing Plate will make him stronger than he already was anyways...
Not that he really even cared about strength and power in this shitty fake world to begin with.
Nevertheless, since it seems like Iris knows how to get stronger on her own, and he felt as though she wouldn't do the unthinkable while she was away, he decided to just let Iris do her own thing and see how things turn out.
"Okay then, just go get whatever you want and tell the places you bought the items from to bill it to me, also make sure you return back by sunset. Any later than that and I'm deducting your salary for the rest of the month." Ronald casually stated and then reached for the remote to watch some TV.
"Understood, Young Master. Thank you." Knowing that Ronald didn't want to be bothered any futher Iris bowed down before heading towards the door.
But just as she was about to reach for the door knob however, she murmured one last thing under her breath before leaving.
"But that won't be necessary."
