I hid behind a car, watching the Gagamba. It circled, snarling. When it was on the other side of the bus, I ran and leaped in through an open window.
"Hello," I whispered, staying low to the ground, "Is anyone in here?" I checked behind the seats and under them.
"S-stay away, I have a weapon."
"It's okay, I won't hurt you. My name is Ryder. I'm here to protect you."
A little boy crawled out from the middle seat.
"Ryder.." his eyes lit up with joy, "you're here to save me!" He ran and hugged my waist. The Gagamba hit the bus, shaking it.
"You gotta keep quiet." I knelt down. The boy nodded his head. I tapped on my shoulders, motioning for him to climb on. Once he was on I stood up and snuck to the front of the bus. Peering out. It was a straight path to the gym. If only I could distract the monster. I looked around trying to find something when my eyes landed on a rock.
"Stay here," I nudged the boy off and went to the rock. Picking it up and laying it flat in my hand. I looked up, trying to find an open window. Three down. I went to the 4th window and lifted the rock, pulling out my staff. I extended it out and threw the rock up into the air. Swinging my staff as though it were a bat, I made a solid hit and the rock went flying out of the bus. I ran back to the boy and picked him up.
Just as I had hoped the monster ran after the rock and struggled to find it. I tightened my grip on the boy and ran. Leaping up to the ledge and slipping inside. I set him down and pushed my back against the wall, gasping for air.
"Everything okay?" Cloak asked, "no injuries?" I looked at the kid.
"I'm fine, but I don't know about him."
"What's your name kiddo," Cloak bent down to his level.
"Julian," he smiled. Cloak put her hand out and Julian took it.
"Let's go get you a check up." And then they were gone. I sat on the floor and grabbed my chest. Close call. Too close. That monster is too close to the school. And how long was Julian in that bus for.
"Ryder," Dalian landed next to me.
"Princess," I smiled. She hit my shoulder teasingly.
"No injuries?" She began to look all around me.
"No." I lifted my arms for her as she checked my sides. She recoiled as if she was in pain.
"What's wrong," I asked leaning towards her.
"You need a shower!" She held her nose and laughed. I glared at her.
"Really?" I joked. And lunged at her, tackling her.
"You need one too now," I hugged her.
"Eww, no get off," she laughed. I held on tighter.
I hovered above her. She looked into my eyes and smiled.
"Go show-" I cut her off.
"Why were you ignoring me? I mean I know why but I need to hear it from you."
She was silent.
"I like you. I just was freaked out cause that was so out of no where last week. Forgive me." She looked away but I could tell her cheeks were red.
"You like me, huh?" I teased. She looked back at me with a pouty face.
"Go shower, Puppy."
I got up off of her and held my hand out. She took them and I pulled her up and into me.
"I like you too, Princess." I whispered in her ear then jumped down to the floor and left to my room for a shower.
I wrapped my towel around my waist and looked at myself in the mirror. My hands resting on the sink as I took a deep breath. My door clicked open and then shut, quietly. I walked out to the bed room area and saw Xonnie looking at my photos. I leaned up against the door and watched her.
"And if I were naked," I asked. She jumped and flipped around. Her eyes went down my body and then back up. She didn't say anything, just stared.
"Like what you see, Princess?" I teased. She covered her face.
"I'm so sorry!"
I walked towards her and lifted her chin. Her face was as bright as a cherry.
"You're cute," I held my hand there a moment more then sighed and removed my hand from her face. I went into the bathroom and put some pants on and then came back out. I sat on my bed and patted next to me. She looked down sheepishly then walked over and sat beside me.
"Tell me about yourself." I leaned back.
"Well.." she folded her hands and looked up at the ceiling, "I am 18, my birthday is December 19th. I like to read mystery books. My favorite color is green. I am Dalian.." she stopped and put her finger to her chin, "and that night where I helped you with Breaker, was my first day as Dalian. But I'm glad I was able to help you." She smiled. I studied her. Her hair was pushed behind her ears, and had a little white headband on. She was wearing a white top and some mint green shorts.
"Tobin?" She tilted her head. I blinked and looked at her.
"Oh, my turn?" I asked. Xonnie nodded.
"Okay well, I'm 18. My birthday is September 28th. I am a model and actor or was at least. My favorite color is also green and I have been Ryder for 11 months now."
Xonnie looked at me with her jaw open.
"11 MONTHS?!" She shoved me, "why did I get picked sooner." She stuck out her bottom lip and stared at me. I raised my brow and started laughing.
"It's not funny! I could have helped you!" She turned away from me, crossing her legs and arms. "Then you wouldn't have had to fight all alone for so long."
I stopped laughing and started at her. She noted my silence and turned towards me.
"That's right.." I said softly, looking down, "I'm not alone anymore." I felt tears hit my eyes.
"Are you.." she looked at my face, "are you crying?"
I pushed her away, "No! Of course not." She sighed and hugged me from behind.
"It's okay. I'm here for you now, you don't need to act tough with me." I put my hand on hers and turned back towards her.
"Thank you," I kissed her hand. She put her head on my lap and curled into a ball.
"We are a team. No man left behind, right?" She asked. I stroke her hair.
"That's right."
She was quiet for while. Looking at the clock I realized it was 1AM.
"Maybe you should go back to your dorm." I looked over at her. She was asleep on my pillow. I sighed and pull the covers over her. I stood above her and kissed her forehead then turned to leave.
"No," she grabbed my wrist, "don't go." She pulled my arm towards her. I gave in. And brought a chair over to the side of the bed. I placed my hand in hers and closed my eyes.
