Richard didn't know what he just heard; all he knew was that Carlos worked as a supermarket cashier in the morning. Since a lot of people were screaming, he figured that was a public place.
"I'm sorry, I have to go." Richard pocketed his phone and ran out of his office. He didn't even bother with the elevator as it was rather slow.
When he pushed the doors of the emergency stairs open, he felt someone grabbed his arm. He turned to the side and saw Noah holding onto him… and they jumped down the center of the staircase.
The center was wide and could accommodate a free-falling body. Richard couldn't help but scream as they fell; however, Noah moved his hold on him and carried him before his feet hit the floor. A small crater was created, and Noah dropped Richard.
The VP then stared at him wide-eyed, seeing the blue glow in Noah's eyes. "You're a witch?"
"Yeah. Let's go." Noah walked off and pushed the door open so they could exit using the backdoor.
"How about your friend?" Richard hurried to catch up, not seeing Luca around.
"He'll be there." Noah then grabbed Richard and dragged him to the black motorbike. "Get on." He then caressed the black motorbike's head as he got on first before Richard snapped out of his confusion. "Can you find where I want to go?"
Richard got on the bike as well, swiftly securing his helmet and giving an address as he went. "It should be close!"
Noah then glanced behind him. "Hold onto me tightly. You'll fall off."
Vroom! The motorbike sped too quickly, and Richard just had to hold tightly like advised. More when he realized that Noah drove into the wall painted black by the trees' shadows. Before he could complain, the motorbike went through and began traveling through the shadows.
The split-second experience shocked Richard, but something was being awakened inside him. It was as if he was getting excited, like a child seeing magic tricks for the first time. He had long heard that his father was capable of doing things normal humans could not.
Now that he was witnessing real magic of witches for the first time…
"Richard!" Noah called out the man who had no idea that they were already at their destination. He then looked at the supermarket on fire. "Is it here?"
"Yes!" Richard snapped out of it and quickly ran towards the place. However, the police had already barricaded the place while the fire department was trying to battle the flames. "Let me through!"
"No can do, sir!" The police officer grabbed Richard who was trying to get close. "Sir, please!"
"Noah!" Luca arrived at the same time Noah did, but he couldn't really show himself riding the invisible hellhound. He then ran to the officer and showed the SCC badge they had received. "We're SCC! People are still inside!"
The officer was shocked, but they had orders. SCC was a special unit, and it was a group of affiliates of the essential forces to protect and save civilians. The officer let Luca and Noah—who struggled to show his badge as well—through and hoped that they could get people out.
Richard was left outside. Even Noah didn't want a hysterical man to be inside a burning establishment. He only walked back to the motorbike, leaned on it, and covered his face with his hand.
…
Gunshots were being fired from inside as the guards were trying to fend off something very strange. It was like a creature that their bullets couldn't hurt. The monster had taken hold of a person and was spitting a lava-like substance that could burn things and corrode anything it stayed on.
Noah dashed to deflect the lava spit with his blue flames. He then sent the monster to the ground after a series of aerial kicks. Bang! The monster fell and growled at the pain. Its supposed occupied hand even lost the person it needed to collect.
Luca then ushered the guards to their feet and told them to leave. He then saw the person thrown away and vaguely recognized the man. Luca carried the person on his shoulder. "I'll take them humans outside!"
"Got it!" Noah summoned his claw and swiped down at the familiar that earned three slits on its abdomen. Gush! The lava flowed out and even almost got on Noah if Caliga didn't pull him away.
Pane and the two others roared and coated themselves with the blue flame before dashing to the enemy, tearing it apart mercilessly. It seemed that their blue flame coat was protecting them from the lava spit.
Noah only watched as the hellhounds quickly dealt with the familiar. He then turned around and saw the other hounds sniffing around and flinging rubble away. They were finding humans hidden under the debris.
"Get them somewhere safe!" Noah ordered the hounds before turning around again to see the familiar. It was already torn down, and he didn't need to do anything about it now. However, he saw a red crystal rose from its corpse. Moreover, a black mist also shrouded its body.
Pane slurped the black mist like he was made to do so. Another hellhound swallowed the red crystal and cued the other brother to help with their search and rescue job.
"What was that?" Noah asked Caliga, and the dog only stared at him. Noah then frowned. "I heard you speak before. I need you to do that again."
"…demon essence. It's useless to us demons but very useful to normal witches." Caliga's deep voice sounded, and Noah stifled his smile. He seemed to enjoy Caliga's voice, but the dog knew his master very well. The hellhound snorted at Noah's face. "Don't dare, Master. We're demons of lust."
"I don't know what you meant." Noah quickly denied and shot down the idea. He then looked around and saw the fire and smoke getting worse. If he didn't have the vision of the hounds, he wouldn't be able to see a thing. "Let's get the people out."
The hounds took the humans to safety, but they did so outside the people's line of sight. At the very least, he could just tell them humans were there after the fire was killed. Noah then watched the supermarket burn, with his hellhounds around him.
That one particular hellhound then walked next to Caliga as if speaking with him. Caliga then shook his head before the younger brother seemed to nod.
In the end, the fire was under control and soon extinguished. Millions of goods were destroyed, and fifty people were found dead and burnt inside. Noah frowned as they weren't notified as soon as it happened. They could have lessened the damage and deaths.
"The familiar… can you identify it?" Luca asked in a whisper next to Noah. After receiving the description, Luca hummed. "I can only bet on gluttony again. Most of the demons of gluttony had this certain criterion of looking like blobs."
"Did you run a check on that person it was carrying?" Noah turned in the direction the ambulances took earlier. The survivors had been taken to the hospital immediately after all.
"Yeah, his name is Carlos Morrison. Aside from his two jobs, nothing much is listed here about him. However…" Luca had already remembered where he saw that man. "He is an employee of Seclusion who talked to us. Maybe, what happened in the castle was traced back to us so they needed information from him."
"Hahah, then let's hit Seclusion after talking to Jonas Jones." Noah snorted. That place was treating people badly as soon as the servers got into the hands of their VIPs. It should learn a lesson enough for it to change. Then again, destroying a bar with a lot of employees wouldn't be in the interest of SCC.
Luca sighed. "Are you going to go back to work?"
Noah laughed out. "Well, I already got out of the hospital after all."
…
Carlos stirred in his sleep and woke up in a place of white. He could hear the heart machine next to him… as well as feel the burning sensation of his burnt skin. When he realized that his face was wrapped in a bandage, he had the urge to cry. However, a hand went to touch his fingers…
"Hey, little lady, are you awake?"
Carlos tried moving his head to the side and saw Richard on the guest stool. The patient's lips somewhat curled, but it held a truly bitter smile. "Am I getting plastic surgery now?"
"Didn't you always want one?" Richard snorted before stroking at Carlos's head. "It was so close. It's good that I… no, they managed to save you."
"…I got saved? Tell that to me when they stopped trying to send monsters after me now." Carlos cried as he laughed. "I thought those were just rumors. I can't believe that it's true.
"Ricky, don't get near me. You might get implicated."
Richard shook his head. "I doubt SCC would take your case as a priority if no big name is involved. I will get involved as much as I want to. Besides, didn't I tell you? I don't get paid to listen to you."
A soundless laugh came out of Carlos, but his tears were both from gratitude and fear. "I can't… Ricky, no. Please listen to me today. You will die if you get near me."
Richard shook his head again. "We are both dragged into the world of demons and witches. There's no way I will separate from you because of this. I have reasons to believe that the people behind this attack and my mother's disappearance could be the same group."
"Then, all the more you should leave. Ricky—"
"He's right, Ricky. Time to step out." Noah chuckled as he entered along with Luca, Carlos's eyes widening in disbelief. "Hello, Carlos. Do you remember us?"
