I just wanted to say that yes there will be a school/ academy arc and that it will most likely span a few dozen chapters . I don't intend to drag them out or make it tedious or repetitive but I know it is required This is due to many reasons
1 I intend to add some characters for the main character to interact with and have friends, rivals and possible love interests and even incorporate some character from canon . Main character need to open up and explore the world
2 as will be explained in further detail in upcoming chapters. Not everyone can become a trainer and just registering or getting accepted to a school does not guarantee that one will become a trainer there will be tests where if failed the student will be dropped from the program. Even with them only passing qualified trainers and giving them extra years to train there own Pokemon the death toll for rookie trainers is still very high with an average of 1/4 dying or becoming physically crippled during there first few years traveling and becoming a trainer.
3 I aslo don't want to needlessly rush through everything I have already done that a bit in the beginning so as to progress to the story instead of writing dozens of chapters about him growing up and connecting with his family.i felt it wasn't overly necessary as I intend to add a few flashbacks throughout to show his relationship m with his family and instead wanted to get to the point of him getting his Pokemon sooner.
4 I need to showcase how Lucas compares to actual trainer prodigy's. He has an ability yes but that doesn't make him a good and competent trainer he's still thinking of this world too much like a game where higher numbers means victory. I won't deny the advantages of being higher leveled with higher stats but in battles techniques and strategies play apart as well. This school will give him a chance to sharpen his own skill and show him his shortcomings.
I want to add that him getting both Pokemon was strictly left to chance. I flipped a coin heads both tails mankey. He was always going to get the mankey, that was the partner I had in mind for him when I first started the story. The reason I want to incorporate this randomness is I feel it will make me flesh out more characters becuase I won't know myself which ones end up becoming more important. It's also vastly more entertaining for me to write like this
