Soon, the day of the results arrived. Ryker stood in front of the results wall, silently observing his position: 98th place. It wasn't much different from what he had expected.
Yun, excited, approached him. "Ryker, I'm number 78. Not bad, right? What place did you get? How come I didn't see your name among the top three?" Looking at him without expression, Yun, who knew his friend well, stopped smiling. "Did you fail the exam?" he asked.
Before Ryker could respond, a mocking voice came from the side. "Haha, the brainiac who always topped the list has fallen to 98th place. I really wonder how he got those results before." Alex was looking at them mockingly. Ryker had always been above Alex in terms of results, so seeing him at 98th place brought Alex great satisfaction.
"What? 98th place?" Yun's face paled immediately, and he quickly found Ryker's name near the bottom of the list. "I've heard that some schools also consider the character of students in their admission. Could it be that the former brainiac, who failed the exam, has always been cheating?" Ryker looked at Alex indifferently and said slowly, "If a dog bites you, will you bite back? You'll just end up with a mouthful of fur." Alex, seeing that look in Ryker's eyes, felt a bit uneasy and decided to leave without saying anything else. In reality, he was just satisfying his ego and spewing words. After all, he knew who was stronger between the two. But now, his verbal skills couldn't compete with Ryker's. Clenching his fists in anger, he went to another room, out of sight.
Yun took a deep breath before calming down and looking at Ryker, worried about him. "So... what are you going to do? Repeat the year? With your skills..."
After a moment of silence, Ryker said, "First, let's go check out Pokémon eggs with you. Didn't you say you could buy a Pokémon egg at a discount? I have all summer to think about it, there's no rush."
Yun nodded. "Yes, we should think it through. In fact, it's not so bad to go to a regular university. Only the top three can choose level C Pokémon eggs; settling for level D ones isn't bad either." Level C Pokémon eggs not only cost more than a million, but also require certain status to buy. It's necessary to have a beginner breeder certification or a beginner trainer certification. Outside the largest Pokémon breeding nursery in Cloudy Garden City, there was already a long line. Two hours later, Ryker and Yun entered the nursery. A pretty receptionist guided them to different rooms after registering their information.
"Yun Nakami, you can choose a Pokémon egg from room D or lower." "Ryker Stark, you can choose a Pokémon egg from room E or lower."
Each room in the nursery was classified, and the qualities of the Pokémon eggs in the different level rooms varied.
"If I don't choose one, can I go to see in other rooms?" Ryker asked.
"Of course," the receptionist replied with a smile.
"Thank you," he responded gratefully, and took Yun by the hand as they headed to room D. The D and E rooms of the nursery were the most numerous. Many students were pondering and choosing in them.
Entering a room D, they saw rows of transparent cabinets filled with adorable, round Pokémon eggs. These eggs came in a variety of colors, and most of them were labeled as common Pokémon like Drillbur and Dwebble. Level D Pokémon like these had a market price between 400,000 and 800,000, but here, with the coupon, they cost only 10%, that is, between 40,000 and 80,000. Ryker remembered the amount of money his mother gave him for daily expenses and realized he couldn't afford it.
Yun was also indecisive about which egg to choose. All the eggs of the same species looked alike. In fact, in terms of appearance, there wasn't much difference between the level D and E eggs, but in terms of hatching potential and quality, the level D eggs produced Pokémon with higher potential and faster evolution speeds. Of course, even among the level D eggs, there were differences, but they were hard to distinguish by appearance alone.
Yun thought about which Pokémon would be better to choose. "Dwebble can evolve into Crustle, which has good attack and defense stats. Although it has a somewhat delayed growth period as a starter Pokémon, its Bug/Rock type combination and abilities like Sturdy make it a versatile and resilient Pokémon in battles."
"Drillbur, if it evolves into Excadrill, has good attack and speed stats. It can learn powerful moves like Earthquake and Rock Slide. It's a versatile and offensively dominant Pokémon in battles. Ryker: ...
He coughed softly and patted Yun on the shoulder, "Take your time deciding. I'm going to take a walk around other places, okay?" Yun nodded. "Go ahead, as long as you don't choose a Pokémon egg for now." Smiling, Ryker nodded and headed towards the E zone of the room. He wanted to take a look.
The E zone wasn't like the D; it had an additional area with rooms labeled "Random Pokémon Eggs." "Random Pokémon Eggs?" Ryker curiously asked the receptionist nearby, "The Pokémon in these eggs aren't tested?"
"That's right," the receptionist replied patiently. "The eggs in other level E rooms are bred and have been tested. At least they can be raised to the Advanced Rank. But these random Pokémon eggs come from wild searches and are classified here by appearance and type of Pokémon. They haven't been tested since the cost of testing Pokémon eggs is high."
"So, even though they're classified as level E, the hatching potential could be worse, and they could even be 'F' level," the receptionist responded.
Frowning, Ryker commented, "So it's similar to gambling on Pokémon eggs?" The receptionist smiled, "Gambling eggs generally have worse abilities and more neglected appearance. Sometimes, the Pokémon that hatch from these eggs can also be disabled. At least the breeding nursery eggs won't have that kind of problem."
"So, can I assume that it's possible for some of these Pokémon eggs to have a higher quality than level E?" Ryker asked, raising his eyebrows slightly. "There's that possibility, but it's not high. The better-looking eggs have already been selected for testing. The ones left..." The receptionist didn't finish her sentence, but the meaning was clear.
Nodding in understanding, Ryker thought that if he could get a level D or even C Pokémon egg in the E section, then he wouldn't have to repeat the year. Excited by this idea, he cheerfully headed towards that room.
