Chương 19: Throw and run

In the sky, a flock of birds swarmed toward a 10-year-old boy, their wings beating in unison, relentless in their pursuit. The boy, Alex, clutched a girl close, maneuvering her through the air like a lifeline. First, he threw her upward, then yanked her back down, then to the right and left, keeping the birds off-course with each unpredictable move. For a full thirty minutes, he fought to stay ahead, his heart pounding as he darted through the skies. Finally, when the birds veered off, Alex slowed, catching his breath.

With one last throw, he sent the girl northwest, quickly darting behind her, catching her midair before she fell. When no obstacles appeared ahead, he decided to descend, his mana nearly depleted, hoping to recover his magic reserves on solid ground.

Alex touched down softly in a clearing and took in his surroundings. Towering above him was a massive tree, at least 200 meters tall, its trunk thick and gnarled with age. Strange fruits hung from its branches, each marked with unusual patterns. With a slight hover, Alex floated to one of the sturdy branches and carefully positioned the girl, Lyra, in front of him. He leaned her against the trunk, securing her on the branch so she wouldn't slip, and finally allowed himself to rest.

As Alex settled on the branch, he closed his eyes, allowing the night's cool breeze to wash over him. The forest seemed peaceful under the starlit sky, but he knew the calm was deceptive; danger lurked in every shadow. Just fifteen minutes had passed since he'd closed his eyes when a low, menacing growl cut through the stillness, jolting him awake.

Alex's eyes snapped open, scanning his surroundings—left, right, above—before finally looking down. There, at the base of the massive tree, was a large tiger. Its eyes gleamed fiercely as it fixed its gaze on him, pacing and growling in frustration. The beast suddenly lunged forward, slamming its head against the tree trunk, each impact making the branches tremble.

As Alex spotted the massive tiger below, he knew he couldn't stay perched on the tree any longer. Floating back into the air, he decided to head toward the capital city that Maren had mentioned. Maren had given him detailed information about the nearby kingdoms and capitals, along with a map. While he was running to escape near Lyra's village he saw the map and chose to go in the north-east direction for this reason.

Grabbing hold of Lyra, he threw her forward in the direction of the capital, then quickly flew after her, repeating this pattern to keep their pace swift and unpredictable. But as he continued, a new threat appeared: a flock of large eagles, fifteen strong, soaring down toward him. Each eagle flapped its wings with intense force, sending sharp wind blades slicing through the air toward him.

Alex swiftly dodged the incoming wind blades, weaving through the air as each sharp gust sliced past him. He used the floating spell on Lyra which was already cast on her, guiding her with precision, sending her darting in all directions to evade the attacks. As the eagles closed in, Alex moved her in unpredictable patterns—up, down, left, right—dodging the wind blades with split-second timing. The two of them became a blur in the sky, a dance of survival against the relentless assault of the eagles.

Alex dodged each wind blade as it cut through the air, guiding Lyra out of harm's way. With the floating spell keeping her steady, he shifted her position quickly, moving her up, down, and sideways to avoid each strike. The eagles were persistent, their wings beating as they circled and attacked, sending gusts of sharp-edged wind at every angle.

Alex kept his focus, maintaining a steady grip on Lyra's movements, directing her path as they maneuvered through the air. He had to stay sharp; one slip would be costly. The relentless birds continued to press forward.

As Alex maneuvered around the eagles' attacks, he decided it was time to strike back. Dodging another wind blade from the flock, he summoned his own gusts, slicing through the air with blades of wind aimed directly at the pursuing eagles. The birds scattered, deftly dodging his attacks, their sharp instincts kicking in as they twisted and veered out of the way.

Taking advantage of their brief confusion, Alex readied himself. With a final push, he grasped Lyra and threw her forward with as much precision as he could manage, sending her soaring in the direction of the capital. The move took a significant chunk of his remaining mana, but he needed to make her and his distance far so, that he could travel fast.

Using his well-timed counterattack, Alex had managed to disrupt the eagles' formation, scattering them momentarily. With Lyra already propelled ahead toward the capital, he was pulled near her.

As the birds recovered and began to resume their pursuit, Alex stayed low and swift, weaving through the treetops, minimizing his mana output but keeping his speed up. The eagles faltered, unable to match his rapid maneuvers, and gradually fell back, leaving Alex and Lyra clear of the threat.

With the eagles finally out of sight, Alex breathed a sigh of relief. He allowed himself a brief moment of rest, leaning back against the rough bark of the tree, his chest still heaving from the exertion. But peace was fleeting. Within a minute, the soft rustling of leaves caught his attention, followed by a low, menacing growl.

Alex's eyes snapped open, and his heart sank as a massive brown bear emerged from the shadows, its sharp fangs gleaming in the dim light of the forest. The creature lumbered toward the base of the tree, its enormous paws crushing the ground beneath it. Alex's senses flared, knowing he couldn't afford to stay still for long.

Without hesitation, he activated his floating magic again, rising into the air and distancing himself from the bear's reach. Grabbing Lyra, he threw her forward into the direction of the capital, pushing her as far as he could manage. He quickly followed, repeating the process—throwing her, catching up, and sending her further ahead. Each throw drained more of his mana, but he kept moving.

After several more throws, the dense trees began to clear, and in the distance, Alex spotted the glimmering outline of the city. The capital was finally within reach.

Chương 20: Capital City

The glow of the capital city was visible even from ten miles away, a soft, enchanting radiance piercing the darkness of the surrounding forest. These weren't the harsh, flickering lights of electricity that Alex had once imagined but the steady, warm glow of magic lamps. The streets and homes shimmered with these ethereal orbs, casting a golden hue over the cityscape.

Maren had explained them to me when I asked about the strange lights. He said these lamps were crafted using intricate magic formations, each one etched with precision to channel and store magical energy. According to him, the art of creating formations was one of the most complex and demanding magical disciplines, requiring not just power but an exceptional understanding of magic theory.

"It's not something you can pick up easily," Maren had said with a smirk. "Most people spend decades just trying to master the basics."

As I drew closer, the city grew in stature, its tall stone walls rising like a fortress against the wilderness. The air seemed charged, humming faintly with an undercurrent of magic. It wasn't oppressive but undeniable—a steady rhythm woven into the life here. The gates loomed ahead, immense and unyielding, their reinforced steel surface adorned with glowing sigils that shimmered faintly in the darkness. A line of travelers stretched before them, each one waiting to pass under the scrutinizing gaze of the guards.

I descended carefully, the floating spell around Lyra dissipating as her body settled in my arms. The guards reacted instantly. Their polished armor reflected the light of the lamps, and one of them, a mountain of a man with a spear that seemed more fitting for a giant, stepped forward.

"Halt," he barked. His tone wasn't hostile, but it carried the weight of authority. "Name and purpose."

I met his gaze, steady but not defiant. "Alex. We're travelers seeking refuge. My companion needs rest and care."

The second guard, younger and leaner, eyed Lyra closely. His sharp eyes betrayed a flicker of concern. "She looks bad," he said. "What happened?"

"An attack on the road," I replied evenly. "She hasn't recovered since. We've come far for help."

The older guard's frown deepened, but he didn't press. "The capital's safe," he said after a moment. "But entry isn't free. Two silvers each."

I reached into my pouch, the worry gnawing at me like a dull blade. Maren had pressed the coins into my hand before I left, insisting I'd need them. Until now, I hadn't. Thankfully, there was enough to pay. The clink of metal in the guard's hand felt heavier than it should have.

"Go straight down the main road," the younger guard instructed, stepping aside to push the gate open. "The healer's guild is near the central plaza, by the fountain. They'll know what to do."

I nodded my thanks and shifted Lyra gently, floating her once more as I passed through the gates.

The city unfolded like a dream. Magic lamps bathed the streets in golden light, illuminating a world alive with movement and sound. Vendors shouted over one another, advertising wares that gleamed and glittered in the lamplight. The air was thick with the smells of roasted meat, fresh bread, and spices I couldn't name. Everything seemed to pulse with vitality—a sharp contrast to the harrowing silence of the forest I'd left behind.

I moved quickly, keeping Lyra steady ahead of me. The crowd parted for us, their eyes flicking toward her unconscious form. There were no words, but I felt their questions lingering in the air. Was it pity? Curiosity? Worry? I couldn't tell. It didn't matter.

A vendor called out as I passed. "Traveler! You look worn out. Try one of these—best pastries in the city!"

The smell was tempting, but I shook my head. "Not now," I said, gesturing toward Lyra. "She needs help."

The vendor's smile faltered, replaced by concern. "The healer's guild is straight down this road," she said, pointing. "You'll see the fountain. Can't miss it."

"Thanks," I muttered, already moving.

The central plaza came into view soon after—a sprawling open space dominated by a massive fountain. Water shimmered as it fell, imbued with the faint glow of magical glyphs etched into the stone. Behind it stood a tall building marked by the symbol of a staff, its light dim yet unmistakable. The healer's guild.

The interior was cooler than I expected, the air tinged with the sharp scent of herbs. A robed woman behind a desk looked up as I entered, her eyes narrowing as they fell on Lyra.

"She needs help," I said, my voice tight with exhaustion.

The healer didn't hesitate, gesturing for me to follow. The treatment room was lined with glowing potions and softly inscribed magic circles. Everything about it felt deliberate, from the positioning of the beds to the low murmur of incantations in the distance.

I set Lyra down carefully, releasing the spell. The healer placed her hands on Lyra's chest, a faint green glow radiating from her palms as she closed her eyes.

"She's stable," the healer said at last, her voice calm but firm. "Exhaustion and mild magical depletion. She'll need rest and restorative potions, but she'll recover."

Relief washed over me, but it didn't last. "How long until she wakes?" I asked.

"A few hours. For now, she needs quiet."

The healer glanced at me, her eyes softening. "You look exhausted. There's food and water in the alcove, if you need it. We'll discuss payment once she's stable."

Payment. The word lingered in my mind, heavy with implication. "How much?" I asked.

"Five silvers for the care. Potions will be extra."

I nodded. It wasn't cheap, but it wasn't unreasonable.
